changing air filter

i am not an entirely stupid guy when it comes to cars... though i am a little old school.

for some reason i cannot figure out how to change the air filter on my '02 sebring. i had the whole dang thing apart, but could not get out the filter or the nylon casing without fear of breaking something.

what is the trick?

my car has the 2.7l v6. she only has 9k miles on her. :banghead:

But if not....do you know where the actual filter is? In that big black box in the lower left of your bay?

Theres a few latches holding the box down...and one small nut on top. Remove them respectively...and disconnect the intake tube that connects into your throttle body. You have to remove the tube to get the filter housing out easily.

Wiggle the filter housing out of the bay....simply remove the filter...and do whatever you need to do.

Post a pic of your bay if you can...I just did this the other day on a 2.7. So I can help you with whatever.

thank you Shizane2002. i was thinking that the intake tube had to come off to get that filter out of there, but, i was thinking that there is no way mopar would make it that involved to just change a simple air filter.

i know it is not difficult removing the elbow, i just think it is kind of rediculous. if there was 1/2" more clearance under the hood, i could've taken out the filter without removing the elbow... go figure.

Wait till you have to replace the battery.

I am thinking changing the air filter on my 04 sebring with a 2.7 litre but was amazed also how tucked away the filter is. I wonder if it is the same procedure for a 04 sebring? malcolm

Yes it is. My 05 is the same way as well.

Are you guys sure there are latches that hold the air box down? All that I see is the nut on top of the box. The only latch I see appears to support an electrical connector?

There are latches on both sides of the intake tube where it goes into the filter housing that have to be released.

I disconnected the latches, and disconnected the elbow from the engine, but I still cannot remove the hose from the engine department as there are additional little hoses that are intersecting and make this impossible. I can pull the filter half way out only.

So there has to be a way to open that air filter housing? I removed the nut on top of the housing, removed the hose (with those two latches), but something else is still holding it, and I can't see what it is.

There has to be something else?

There's a little braket on the left side of the box that holds some wires. Slide it up to release it. The filter box doesn't open up - comes out in one piece.

If someone else tries to do this again, these are the detail steps I
did:
1) Unscrew the bolt on the top (it's on the top right side of the box)
2) Remove the hose from the box (by using two clips)
3) Remove the other end of the hose from the engine (need a
screwdriver for this). This step may not be necessary, but I found it easier, as I could make more space to remove the box by pushing the hose away (couldn't completely remove the hose because there are some intersecting wires that make this impossible).
4) There's a little braket on the left side of the box that holds some
wires. Slide it up to release it.
5) Carefully remove the box from the engine compartment. This is still
not easy, as the air cleaner box is big. The air cleaner box DOES not
open, take it out in one piece.
6) Take the old filter our and put the new one (this is easy).
7) Place everything back in place.

Damn :eek: Whatever happened to:

1-loosen wingnut
2-remove air cleaner lid
3-remove filter
4-put in new filter
5-replace lid
6-install wingnut.
