for those that have the GS, GS-R, and Type R do you always have to use premium gas? or can you use regular?

GS only needs regular. The gs-r is so-so (I don't really notice a difference when I drop down to 87 from 93 but when I put a tank of 93 in again after running 87 it does feel a little perkier) and for the Tye R i would definitely go with premium.

I always use premium, specially on higher compression motors. Higher octane means that the gas can be compressed more before it is ignited. If you use low octane in a high compression engine, the gas has a chance of igniting because of the compression and before the spark. This is called knocking. If you use high octane, the gas can be compressed more and there is less risk of compression ignition. This is why most people who run high, high boost on cars will run race gas, because the extra compression from the boost will create knocking if using lower octane gas. Based off that information (which I got from howstuffworks.com) Using high octane in low compression engines might make it harder for the gas to be ignited, because it's not as compressed as it could be.

Too make a long story short, I would go with what the manufacturer says. Unless you are running modified, ex. upped compression, FI, things that increase compression. Personally, I've never used anything but premium in my GSR. I have a friend who uses regular in his GS and has absolutely not problems with knocking, or pinging. The previous owner used regular in my car once, and said he experienced pinging when he accelerated, and hesitation. Based on this info, I will always use premium, it makes more sense. :2cents: ;)

I would go with premium, just because thats what the factory recomends, as for the GS i dont think it needs it

Acura recommends a minimum octane rating of 92 for the GSR and Type-R and a minimum Octane rating of 87 for the RS/GS/LS. If you've upped the compression or the motor n/a and/or turbo'd the car, however, consider running premium.
