(assuming they aren't N/A) Well soot, as you call it, is from over fueling which in able to have enough fuel to accually clog a turbocharger with soot, you would hydro lock the engine. Also you have to remember that heavy soot is only produced when the engine is using alot of fuel on a high load situation which in a truck is only a small percent of time. Also, You are thinking of primitive diesel engines that were dirty burning and everything like that. With EUI and HEUI and COMMON RAIL injection, they run sooo clean now a days. I wish people would get the old preception of deisel enignes out of their heads. I am a deisel technician for a CAT dealrship. Anymore questions about deisels I would be happy to help. Also, diesels that are used for racing tend to be in high load/stress situations quite often.... And from what i've seen, when a diesel floors it on the highway, you see a big jet of soot shoot out of the exhaust pipe, i would assume that that is stuff that has built up over time, because after the initial spurt of soot it doesnt keep spewing out [visible] stuff.... And do more research than "i mean, just smell one that goes by you". The fact is that the diesel design is absolutelly amazing. Its a very efficient engine and nowadays it runs very clean due to, for example: advancements in high presure injectors causing better mixtures. Why do you think over 50% of western europe runs diesels. And they all meet all the stringet european emission testing. and you clam to be an enviromentalist So lets do some proper research into grenhouse gasses: 2005 golf diesel puts out 5.1 tons of greenshouse gasses per year. so lets compare this to another car in the same class: 2005 ford focus puts out 6.6 tons of greenhouse gasses and the car you have listed as owning in your profile: 1991 Buick Regal puts out 8.1 tons (that is with the smallest engine available) true due to high combustion temps they do emit more NOx gasses (issue that is being curently fixed) but the overall emissions are verry low. Soot is not blowing out of a diesel. that is just back smoke. If you don't know anything about diesels, then you just would not understand I guess. When deisels are used in racing, that is a completly different application. If you are an environmentalist, then I would think that you would be agenst racing as a whole, also you should apericate the deisel engine even more than a gas engine. What other gas engine makes the same ammount of power a diesel does and has the same ammount of fuel consumpsion?? NONE. Do you realize how much gasoline it takes a gas engine to make over 550 Ft-lbs of torque (which we all know is the only way to measure how much work an engine is capible of doing) If you are worried about the enviroment, then you should be EXTREMELY pleased with the CATERPILLAR ACERT engines. They all meet 2007 teir 4 emmision standard in 2004 and they use no type of exhaust gas recirculation. Just better injection, Higher boost levels, and better Injection pressures. Oh the reason you see a black jet of FUEL shoot out is because when you floor it, it sends enough fuel to support the boost it will be at. Well it takes a bit for the boost to get there to support that fuel. From the factory, this WILL not happen but, with the older mechanical fuel systems. Which cummings and detroit still use to an extent, it is real EZ to crank up the fuel for more power. Eletronic engines are even ezier to increase the fuel by just adding the chips and what not to increase the fuel load. More fuel=more heat=more boost=more power. Also since diesels spin so slow, superchargers whould not be able to achive the boost levels that most diesels run. (20-40 PSI is the norm) Comparing an engines emmisions to how it smells is like sniffing Tap water that has alot of sulfer in it and saying it's not safe to drink. BS. Just a common myth I see alot Well in knew diesels run lean by design, plus with their high efficiency which is normally associated with high CR and high temps. Plus it seems latelly they have been increasing combustion temps to improve combustion efficiency in order to reduce the particulate matter emission, the only problem being that increased temps also increase NOx emissions. Because of all that I've got the impression that diesels were running even hotter than gasoline engines. Anyway i stand corrected. Sorry if i came off like a know-it-all jackass who just wanted to bash on diesels It is not necessarily the amount of emmitions produced by an engine, it is WHAT is produced, from what i understand. Diesel is a less refined form of gasoline, so i dont see how it could be any cleaner when it burns.
