The transmission in my 96 will suddenly shift down to 1st and be stuck. It can be fine for awhile and suddenly shift down. Any ideas???

First thing that I would check would be the range switch on the top of the transmission.'
It is also called the "neutral" switch....
This senses the selection that you have made (PRND21).
