Double-Clutching VS Granny Shifting

Ok so I've been "granny shifting" since I bought my car and I've gotten to the point where I can shift rather fast. But I hear that Double-clutching is supposed to be faster in a drag scenario. I've practiced double-clutching and still seems as though "granny shifting" is faster. Can anyone tell me why and/or how double-clutching is better? I don't see the point outside of preventing wear on your clutch/transmission.

double clutching is required only in cars with no syncros. All modern cars have syncros therefore it will not be required to double clutch unless the gearbox is bad in which case you don't race.

also there is no such thing as "granny shifting" unless you use in a derogatory maner with the clear intent of insulting someone else's shifting skills.

95 grand am... it definitely has synchros... don't worry about double clutching. If you were downshifting you can start with rev matching... that does help the tranny.

there is such thing as double declutching though which is described here http://www.tcsracing.org/heelandtoe.htm

but as far as double clutching as portrayed in FandF does not exist

umm hello we already talked about double clutching (or double declutching as they call it on that site) so yes of course we know the technique exists, we even mentioned is required on trans cases with bad or no syscros.

And the link you provided is to the heel and toe technique which to quote from that link of yours:
This technique is often confused with double declutching which is a seperate process that can be used to assist your shifting...

so why are you trying to correct us?and why the double post?

Bottom line:
double clutching isn't used in drag racing, it is a technique that aids in downshifting. You don't downshift in a drag race.

I downshift everyday, because my vr4 is prone to excessive synchro wear and I want them to last...it is a good habit to get into, however as said, it has nothing to do with drag racing.
So as Neutrino said, DON'T EVER take anything from F&F as real, and you'll be fine. General rule of thumb: Paul Walker and Vin Diesel know less about cars than you do.

granny shifting means shifting before engine potential i think, i saw it being mentioned in a drag racing video where the guy shifted at 4 grand.... anyways from an M5 instructional video, it says double clutching saves your transmission life but is not necessary in cars nowadays. Is heel toe a double declutch action or is it just blippin throttle with clutch disengaged, as in single clutch?

hahaha...i just ordered 3 spoon engines, t66 turbo with nos and a MoTeC system exhaust. I have at LEAST $100,000 under the hood and should be able to have a 10 second car. lmao!

You bought 3 engines for one car? O.o

I would find it rather difficult to fit $100,000 under the hood of any one car that doesnt have the words 'V12' in its engine description.. or that isnt meant to last for a 20 or so runs down the strip, even then; sketchy.

Have fun with that.

I fully agree with points 1 & 2, but many people still use double-clutching (or double-declutching as some people refer to it) for racing or even just to increase the life of their tranny/synchros.
The purpose of double-clutching is to match the engine revs to the driveline speed in a downshift. The process is: engage clutch - shift into neutral - disengage clutch - blip the throttle - engage clutch - engage lower gear - disengage clutch.
When you get proficient at the process it can be done is a split second and will result in very smooth downshifts. This is important for several reasons in aggressive/race driving: first is transmission longevity; it removes a lot of unnecessary wear from the synchros. Additionally, by not forcing the engine to rev up when the clutch is re-engaged after a downshift (without double-clutching), it helps the driver maintain better control over the deceleration. While racing, most drivers use a downshifting technique called heal-toe by where you blip the throttle when downshifting when the clutch is engaged, then let the clutch back out. The idea is to make a smooth downshift to maintain control and minimize driveline wear. The advantage of double-clutching over simply heal-toe downshifting is in the internal working of the transmission. Basically all modern automobile transmissions are of the constant-mesh design, which means all the mainshaft gears are constantly meshed with the cluster gear, thus, when the input shaft is turning, so are all the mainshaft gears. By double clutching, you're engaging the transmission in neutral, then hitting the throttle causing the transmission to come up to engine speed. In heal-toe shifting, the engine and transmission are disengaged from each other so only the engine rpms speed up. The only time I really use this over heal-toe is when I am decelerating very hard, say coming up to a sharp corner where I will skip a gear in downshifting. It helps to safely match revs and better maintain control. Hope this helps clear things up.

You know we have a thread stickied in the eclipse forum just to keep this from happening. NO double clutching. rev matching is diffrent, and it has nothing to do with WEARING out your transmission its to save your clutch a little wear and tear and keep the balance of the car.just close the thread and cut and paste the post at the top of the eclipse forum. lol save the world some trouble, and all you retards that have no idea when ppl are being sarcastic about the FnF movie. figure it out.

I actually blew the weld on my intake yesterday by racing vin diesil "DUDE I ALMOST HAD HIM!!!!" But I do have one quarrel with the movie "It doesnt matter if you win by an inch or a mile" If you win by a mile in a 1/4 race, was your opponent going in reverse????

not only was he going in reverse, he was doing it 3 times faster than you, so really, he has the faster car.

Well he had a green eclipse with a cool air intake, 2 of the big NOS bottles and a stand alone fuel management system, wasnt a bad way to spend $10,000 if u ask me
