My lock broke on the driver's side on my '95 jetta. The dealer is gonna charge me $150 to replace it. Anybody have the same problem? If anyone did, any suggestions other than getting robbed?

There are plenty of sources for used, afermarket & even VW parts online.

the price the dealer quoted is not unreasonable, but you can get a replacement from a junkyard for around $40 and do it yourself. be prepared for a long tight fitting struggle., but it is do-able for novices. The drivers lock is a vital part of the alarm and central locking system and there are no aftermarket locks available.

Not that its safe to go around without a lock on your door, but Mine did the same thing. But you are able to by pass the alarm if you have to. I belive the alarm is grounded because of the little flashing light at the lock. But the guy was ab;e to diagnose and fix that by reading the owners manual.
