Tried to die on me...

I was out 4-wheeling around in my blazer some the other day.

I had went up this really steep hill, and as you can figure what comes up must come down. So, when I came off the hill I came off of it in 4-low and first gear, because yes it is that steep. Even in that low a gear a person still has to ride the brakes a little. I suppose a person could have made it down in 4-low and second, but anyway back to my point.

After I came off the hill the blazer tried to die at the bottom, and I figure it was mostly from letting the gear hold it back for such a long steep hill, probably took two and a half minutes to get to the bottom. It's not uncommon for one to try and quit at the bottom of that hill, but it had trouble running for another half an hour after that. It would run really good, but anytime I would push in the clutch it would try to die out again, it always caught itself before it quit, but had trouble idling for a long time.

What causes that? I've only seen it happen for just a minute or so in other vehicles on that same hill, it's like coming off loads them with fuel or something and they have to burn the extra off. I got worried about it after it done it for so long, and then all of a sudden it was just ok again and hasn't done it since.

Sounds like you starved the fuel pump for fuel going down the steep grade and you might have sucked up some grime into the fuel filter.

Is it running fine now?

Yeah, it's fine now.

I doubt it would have starved the fuel pump though, unless it will happen on a full tank.

The tank was completely full?

Yeah, the tank was full. I had just left the gas station before I went off-road. Wanted to make sure I had plenty of gas in case we had gotten stuck that night or anything.

I guess it just struck me as odd because it done it for so long afterward. I've starved the fuel pump and such on other vehicles on this same hill, but usually they picked right back up after getting to the bottom and sittin in the level.

The way this one did was very similar to that in the way it tried to die. It just took about thirty minutes for it to finally start acting normal again. Anytime I pushed in the clutch it would try and die out. When it would try and die out it would idle itself back up, but it wouldn't hold an idle, just up and down, so it was at least trying to stay running.

Might be time to change the fuel filter.

It might be, but it's not that old. I changed the fuel filter and fuel pump about two oil changes ago, but that doesn't mean it's not dirty I don't guess, stranger things have happened than that.

My 92 jimmy cpi did the same thing at boat ramps. It would barely have enough power to get itself and an empty boat trailer up the ramp. Turned out to be leaking supply and return fuel lines. Probably from excess fuel in the air plenum.
