97 Cavalier valves ticking and oil grade?

Is it recommended to use SAE 5W 30 oil and why? I've been using 10W 30. My valves have been ticking louder than usual but I have not found any oil leaks or can the gas grade affect engine performance? Any response helpful, thanks.
