I thought I would start this trend to watch our members Rodeo's rack up the miles over the years.

Here is the format to use:

1998 trooper ls
117,000 miles.
3.5 L, TOD 4wd
bought it used 2 years ago
mechanic tells me it has a bad cylinder and the oul is dumping into it. says it is only a matter of time before it blows and I should decide wrther to shell out thousands to fix it or trade it in. Also, TOD check light just started flashing and one of the auto locking hubs makes a grinding noise occasionally when engaged. (not fond of the TOD by the way). Love the truck and would love to have it fixed but I must think hard about it.

Any Major Problems: Intake gasket failed at about 32,000 miles while under warranty. Discovered incorrect Champion spark plugs were installed in my vehicle about 16,000 miles later.
Comments: Used an engine cleaner after two problems were fixed. Installed synthetic oil. Use an fuel injector cleaner every tankful. Engine now operates very smoothly. Trooper also consistently achieves about 22-24 mpg. I love this SUV!

1993 Trooper Diesel Turbo, automatic, sunroof, bull bars
230,000 Miles (370,00km)
New rubber boots on front CVs (CVs were fine, boots tore)
3 changes of cam belt
1 new starter motor - at 200,000m
3 " big bore exhaust fitted (more power, better gas milage) at 100,000m approx
Power steer hose weeping where bolts to pump (virtually from new)...never bothered to change....level stays between high/low in reservoir, never topped up
4 sets of tyres
1 wheel alignment
10 auto gearbox standard services
(Feels like) a million oil changes!!
Grease all nipples once a year
Repacked front auto hubs once
Recently flushed radiator, new antifreeze. No leaks.
Replaced front door speakers as had perished.
Still uses no oil, and economy high 20's per gallon, mostly at 50 to 75 mph. Some towing of horse float (once weekly).
All trips minimum of 20 miles.
Although incredibly boring to drive is very economical and reliable.
Seemingly bullet proof.
Only gripe - aircon not too good on very hot days.
Body no rust or damage.
No 4wd use.
Expecting 500,000km (300,000m) then probably buy another much newer.

I had a 93 Trooper with over 100k, then I got hit rear ended by a semi. I obviously replaced it with another trooper. The one I drive now, a 1998 I bought after it had expired a 4 year lease. It had 50k, and now has over 120k. No problems

I used/use both for work, and in my mind they are basically trucks. At least they work like one.

1998 with 178,000 miles. Owned since new. Oil leak when new. Dealer pulled motor and repaired problems. Torque on demand sensor was replaced at 170,000. Rotors rusted out at 150,000 miles. Brakes twice. 4 sets of tires. Other than that just maintenance. Oil consumption same as others I see here, 1 to 2 qts between changes. It has always used oil. Currently fighting an electrical problem. Seems to be the alternator.

Great car!

Problems:
- Bought at 80K
- Engine blew 600 miles later - main and rod bearings
- Engine replaced by dealer with used 50K
- At 100K rear end differential went. Probably due to botched replacement of pinion seal a few months prior.
- Significant oil use (2+ qts per 1000 miles)

After searching the forum, will be trying Sea foam in crankcase, soak, or CD2 solutions to problems

I read someplace that the reason the 98 plus troopers burn extra oil is because while trying to increase perfomance they over increased the manifold pressure which burns the extra oil, or something like that.

It's best to leave this thread mileage/age only. Start a new thread with something like "98 Trooper - No heat" or whatever your model/year/engine is and answers will come there.

1986 Sold in Virginia then exported to Bolivia in 1995.
Engine is a 2.3 L 4ZD1
Miles about 136,700. Odmeter is in miles not kilometers.

Brake pads make a clack clack noise at times. A little grease on the ears has helped, nothing has cured it.

Oil sometime measures incorrectly. I've over filed on a couple of occasions.

Oil leaks on right side or fuel pump side of the engine.

I think a tune up would help, sometimes seems to have a lot less power than other times. I need the specifications for a tune up.

Alternator brushes went out and all the lights came on.

So far, we have only had it for 6 months, no major problems. Could used rear shocks and spring mount rubber bushings. What the heck! she is 20 years old.

Great ride, and low gear power is real good.

Currently has a blown motor. Fighting Isuzu to replace it. Warranty ran out in May 2005.

The warranty on my 1998 was 60,000. #1 bearing went at 63,000. I had "a little discussion" with the dealer and rep. They replaced the engine. I paid for a new oil pump (~$200). I also paid for a new timing belt to be put in at the same time.

Don't give up the fight.

I also had a "little discussion" with the local dealer, and the Isuzu folks at the "complaint Dept" I believe in Colorado. They refuse to do anything. They say if I cannot provide proof that I changed the oil every 3,000 miles, They cannot help me. I did indeed keep the oil changed on a regular basis, but more like every 4,000 to 4,500 miles. However, I didn't feel I needed to keep all of my receipts. My attorney and I are discussing our options. #1 file a class action civil suit. This will be a massive search for all people that have had, or are currently having, the same problem I did (massive oil consumption), and pull them all together to sue Isuzu. #2 just go to small claims court to try to prove the 2000 3.5 litre engine was manufactured with defective Pistons, rings, cylinders and oil ports. We'll see.

TRUST ME. I will not give up the fight. I work as an administrator at a county prison, and have had 15-20 attorney's tell me they are willing to help anyway they can. I also have two county judges as friends that are interested in this. Just a matter of time.

Year: 1999 Trooper S
Engine: 3.5L
Mileage: 73k
Any major problems: Bought it used but untitled in 2000 with only 8k miles on it. Ex was hit pretty hard on the driverside front by a drunkard in 2002. $13k worth of damage and the insurance still didn't total it so I kept it. Fought with the repair shop to get everything just right until I deployed to Bosnia in 2003. Still pulls to the left when you let go of the wheel and the hood is misaligned so that the hood sensor isn't activated unless you jam something in there(currently a small ball of duct tape) and the rear door on that side won't open sometimes because the lock won't pop up all the way(didn't open for over two years, then one day I just pulled up on the lock and bingo, I have a 4door truck again:wink: It sat under pine tree's for almost three years so you can imagine the paint. The windshield is cracked on the top corner on the drivers side, from the inside!! How'd that happen??
I think its starting to burn oil, or either i just noticed it and I just had to top off the brake fluid. I'm glad I got it here, it needs some TLC and hopefully I can give what it needs, I really do like the thing!!
