My '99 Trooper has 158K and is running great. Other than reported oil burn of 1 qt every 750 miles, non routine repairs have been minimal.

Son has '97 Trooper LS and we rebuilt tranny after 105K. Everything else running well.

Bought her new; other than the tranny, all we've done is T-belt, w-pump, tune ups and belts/hoses. Great vehicle! We don't use her as much as we probably should. Motor is strong and pretty good mileage.

No major problems. I did have an unusual rattle that was a puzzler for a while. Rattle from right hand valve train, intermittant, metalic clatter, much worse at times, no systematic times, hot/cold motor, rpm or other logical patterns. Would always go away at higher rpms but that level varied greatly. Other times no rattle at any rpm. After replacing a perfectly good timing belt tensioner(pusher), tensioner pulley and idler pulley, belt too of course, found a bolt that had completely backed out of the rear timing belt cover for the right hand bank. It was trapped in the concave area of the cam pulley and rolling around , rattling against the metal cover and the cam pulley. Sometimes it would catch in a smooth place and just scrape, other times spin with the cam shaft and rattle / clatter loudly.
I checked the other cover bolts(both banks) and found all to be loose, a couple just finger tight. Some carb cleaner to degrease and locktite has kept things quiet for the last 30,000 miles. Steel bolts into alloy threads with a generous weeping of oil from the valve covers seemed to cause this.
Also:
Just bought,
2002 Trooper 3.5L, 29,000 miles, no known major problems.
I do have high idle when putting this in drive, seems to be maybe 750 to 800 in neutral and goes to 1100 or so in gear. Really wants to move at stop lights. Searching site now for ideas. Doesn't seem to be vaccum leak.

1994 Trooper 4 Dr stick
3.2 SOHC
190,000 miles. Bought it at 16 miles. We have been through a lot together.

Starter died at about 80k (I just made sure I parked at the top of a hill for a month or so - another reason to buy a stick).
Neutral safety switch, clutch cylinder, and exhaust leak around 80k also.
Couple sets of brakes, one set of rotors.
Timing belt tensioner went at about 180k (see my post) - changed T belt, tensioner, water pump (it seemed fine), and all belts. Neither rear window is working right now. The motors are fine but the cable broke on one and the up switch does not work on the other.

The transmission is starting to slip and I am thinking this may be the end. I admit I have not been as good to my Trooper as he has been to me so I'm going to try to fix him up. After 12 years and 190k miles, it's the least I can do.

Congratulations. I am over 205,000. I have had transfercase problems. My model has TOD. My suggestion would be to find a good mechanic. The one I used was not a dealer and although he did a fine job he said he would not work on it again. Apparently its a difficult system to understand. As for the dealer I have no confidence that anything they tell me is the truth. Good luck. Its a fine automobile. I love everything about my car except the fuel milage.

No major problems that were due to vehicle. Previous owner (original owner, I'm the 2nd) hit a stump while deer hunting in the swamp down here and knocked a hole in the oil pan. Fried engine before he realized problem. I just have a few vaccum issues to contend with since the mechanic that rebuilt it got in a hurry on reassembly.

Problems: :banghead: There is not enough room in this forum to list all the problems. But here is a sample: EGR codes, Drinks oil by the gallon, AC compressor vibrated itself loose, misfire codes, black smoke- runs rich for some reason, Transmission went out and will only shift manually after rebuild, Ion module "issues", Camshaft positioning sensor bad. Oil pressure ranges from 85psi down to 10psi when warm. This Trooper is like a bad habit I can't kick. Keep dumping money into it knowing it will never be better but always hoping.

1986 Trooper II
2.3L
~168K Mi.

Bought my Trooper from a friend about three years ago. Before I got the Trooper, my buddy had the engine rebuilt and a new clutch installed. I keep the Trooper at my vacation home in Salt Lake City, so I only drive it two or three weeks a year, probably average 2500 miles each year.

First summer I had it, we drove it from Salt Lake thru Las Vegas and down to Los Angeles. Drove it at 75 all the way, even through the desert. It did fine, except for the A/C going through the desert. My wife, grandaughter, and I were about to break out in a sweat with the A/C going full blast. My wife's little jar of Carmex lip balm went liquid sitting on the console, it was that hot. Not complaining, I was totally happy the Trooper the entire trip. I've never done the math, but gas milage is excellent with the little 2.3L .

The 2.3 four cyl is a little wimpy going up mountains in Salt Lake, even using high test. I'm always leading the line of traffic up the mountain to Alta each morning to ski. I've come to beleive that's a good thing though. It keeps me out of trouble on icy roads before the plows have been through.

It does use oil, I keep it watched regular. I've just switched it to Mobile 1 full synthetic. It did develop a drip from the rear main as soon as I did. Next time I change oil, I'm going to put in the M1 full syn high milage oil and see if the additives will work on the rear main seal. I've also started putting Marvel Mystery Oil in with the gas as a top cyl lube. Might be my imagination, but I think it makes a difference.

- Ticking in engine, previous owner replaced half of rocker arms (or lifters, forget which), then remedied by oil additive when selling.
- Transmission slipping immediately after startup and when re-accelerating after slowing down (ex: for a turn)
- currently working on an apparent charging system problem (posted in forum)

I thought I would start this trend to watch our members Rodeo's rack up the miles over the years.

Here is the format to use:
Year:1998
Engine:3.5
Mileage:160000
Any major problems: Starter at 120,000, air cond compressor at 150,000. Oxygen sensor at 16,000 replaced under warranty, Rear driveshaft seal replaced twice at 100,000 and still leaking. EGR valve at 88,000 put the old unit back on at 140,000- check engine light went out and stayed out. Must have been dirty. Intake gasket at 80,000- i was going to sell it and used silicone in the break without removing anything- still holding. She goes through brake pads every 15,000-20,000 miles- replaced the complete set of cailper supports twice. Seems like they rust the caliper pins and this doesn't allow the calipers to return to postion even with silicone grease and new bushings.First time I bought them from Isuzu. Now Advance has them for 8.00 each fronts and 16.00 each rear. Just an FYI- got 228,000 miles out of my 1986- had to start it on starter fluid towards the end. Some minor problems but this is a great truck.

2001 Trooper 4x4 - bought as a demo with about 1,200 miles in 2001
3.5 6 cyl engine
Auto
42,000 miles.

LOVE the vehicle! A little hard on gas maybe, and not too strong pulling a loaded trailer, but a nice smooth, quiet ride with lots of room in the back seat. (And tons of headroom too.)

Has been very reliable EXCEPT the vacuum switch valves on the front axle got sticky and would not make the front axles engage into four wheel drive. This pis*ed me off royally, as I had to go a whole Canadian winter without 4 wheel drive until I figured out the problem and how to fix it. However, it's fixed now (just took the VSVs off and shot electrical contact cleaner inside) and for front axle locks up like a dream!

Also, I got a "free" oil change coupon at this little shop a couple of years ago, and the 'technician' somehow lost (or more like pried out) the gasket from the oil filler cap. This created a vacuum/pressure(?) problem in the engine which caused the head gasket to blow, which was about $350 to fix. Dirty bast*rd. But I did not get it fixed at the shop that 'lost' the gasket. Bloody thieves. :crying:

Now I love my Trooper again! It's been great.
