The owners manual for my 97 powerstroke says to tow with the truck in overdrive. other folks tell me to turn OD off while towing. I have done this and the tach gets close to redlining at 75 or 80. so i turn OD off on the hills and leave it on for the flats. But i need to know what i should be doing, these transmissions are very expensive.

thanks for a reply

It all depends on what the trans is doing. If it is constantly shifting in and out of O/D then just leave it out of O/D. If the trans is not shifting then leave it in O/D. So just use good judgement. But always remember shifting causes wear in automatic tranny's so the less shifting the better.
