Has anyone ever tried removing, "derusting" and then repainting a hitch... Mine looks like 'dookie' especially due to the MI winter and all the road salt. Any deas?

Yip, I did it and it looks awesome, but you dont' have to remove it to do it really.

Sand it down well and rough up the surface to remove the rust.

Whipe it with a dry shop towel to remove the dust.

Get a can of Treclad GLOSSY black paints and giver shit.

It looks brand new.

You only have to paint what is seen. Don't bother putting the work into painting the whole thing when you will never see it tucked under the vehicle.

Tremclad Rust paint: Do you have it in the states?

And no, it is not worth painting the part of the hitch under the truck. Paint what can be seen from outside and rust oil the rest of it.

hahahaha I like that show...

I'm in Lansing and I have the same problem. I tried sanding it down and then I used rustoleum "extreme rust" prevention primer and painted black rustolem on top, but its only been 5 months and it's already chipping off : (

I bought a used trailer hitch for my Blazer. It had some rust and chipping on it. Here's what I did:

Scuffed up all the paint with a wire brush and really scrubbed the rusted areas.
Wiped it down with some acetone (what I had handy, any spirits should work) to remove any grease, road grime, and loose particles.
I then sprayed the hitch with Dupli-color Adhesion Promotor.
Then for the final coating I sprayed several coats of Dupli-color Truck Bed Coating.

That was about nine months ago and it still looks like new. That truck bed coating is pretty tough. Just make sure the surface is prepared well so it will bond properly. Don't know how well it will hold up during harsh winters. They aren't bad here in North Carolina.

Should use POR15 before painting... Unless the rust is sealed it will eventually peel up again..

Is that the stuff that turns rust into primer?
