2000 blazer surge around 60 MPH

My coworker's 2000 blazer has a surge at 60 MPH. There was no check engine light. The fuel filter has been replaced by the dealer and nothing has changed. The dealer really has no idea. He also has the dreaded fuel guage problem, where the guage bounces around all the time. From what I have read, that is the sending unit in the tank. But still can't figure the surge problem at 60 mph????? The only things I can think of is fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, O2 sensor, EGR, or even something with the lockup converter. Any ideas?? Anybody else have this problem?

Remember, just because the check engine light is not on doesn't mean there is a code stored.

The light doesn't have to be for a code to be there.

Need to run the vehicle at 60mph with the scanner. You can check the torque converter clutch and O2 sensors at the same time for clues.

When the surge occurs is the climate control set to air conditioning or defrost? Mine has had the issue since new and surges every 10 seconds on the highway. Dealer narrowed it down to the compressor cycling. They tried replacing a pressure switch which made no difference. They then worked with GM in Oshawa and GM came back and said the surge was within factory spec (aka - we can't fix it so we are calling it normal).

The AC compressor is a good idea to check. I'll have to get with him and check it out. I have an old 93 fullsize blazer that does that. Whenever the compressor cycles, my truck has a little bit of a surge, I hate it, hehe. Thanks for the tip!! And the scanner idea is great too. Too bad my autoxray is for OBD 1 only.. I think it's time to upgrade!! I'll see what I can do about that. Thanks all!!

Yip, that could be the cause.

If it is constantly surging, that means the comp[ressor is going on and ff frequently which means low refrigerant and the compressor is being damaged.

Is there a sensor or something that could go bad to cause this sort of thing when the AC or defrost is off?? Just curious??

no, but a check engine light will come on if there is a problem.

ASk the friend if it will stop when the AC is off.
