I fuged up an alternator for my chevy and picked up a replacement from auto-zone. Had to go back 3 times to get what looked like the right one.
Finally after blowing the fusible link I have a mechanic(expert) take a look at the truck. He tells me that the alternator is wrong becuase of the electrical system in the truck (24 volt) and to get the old one so he can rebuild it for me.
I call up Autozone and explain the situation, the guy tells me that I should have held onto the core until after I knew or made sure the replacement was the right one. Problem is the person who helped me in the first place asked me for the core when he finaly found what he thought was the right alternator.
The core is on a truck some where in Ohio and they arent sure if they can get it back. Autozone gave me the wrong parts and is now telling me that I can get a core refund and a full refund, but that doesnt fix the problem that my original is lost in space somewhere.
The right part is gonna cost about $119.00, more epxpensive that the $80.00 crap from Autozone, I think they should pay the difference or something. Do I have a arguement here or any leg to stand on?

I posted earlier on the vehicle I got, its a 1985 Chevy Blazer 6.2L diesel CUCCV army version. It ran great down I-81....until the batteries died and the alternator fried out.

Have you thought about conterting it to 12v? There's another forum with nothing but military vehicles, they tell how to convert it easily. I'll find it for you. Even if you don't want to convert they can tell you the best place to find parts.

Here's the other forum I was talking about:
http://www.steelsoldiers.com/DotNetForum/default.aspx
More than likely you will have to settle for the core value of your old alternator.

I had a similar problem getting a refund or replacement from advanced auto when i had my s-10... They sold me a fuel pump that had to be ordered from the dealer b/c it was a flex fuel. The new fuel pump was defective. I got it in AR and moved to TN recently. Advanced auto in TN told me i had to take it back to AR because they didnt carry it in stock. Thats understandable i guess. I messed with the guys in AR for almost 3 weeks and finally i threatened to call their regional manager and they sent me the correct fuel pump a couple days after that. I dont think they should sell parts that cant be replaced because its not in normal stock. They should at least give a different receipt with different return policies if they give trouble standing by their warranty.... By the way... Dont ever get a flex fuel vehicle!!! Parts are expensive and usually requires purchase from the dealer.
