I just bought a 2004 4x4 4dr blazer a couple days ago. By the way it kicks a** compared to my s-10 i got rid of..... What is the biggest tire size i could put on there without rubbing or changing the shift points/speedo that much? I wasnt sure if the 2004 was any different from the older models so i figured i would ask. Thanks...

You change the tires at all, you will have to calibrate the speedo.

Just leave the stock tires on it.

Yes any size change should be followed by re calibrating the computer.

I've got 265/70/15 BF Goodrich Longtrail TAs they don't rub at all and take up most of the fender well, you could probably go just a little bigger than that, but I wouldn't.

Have to use a programmer or the GM Tech2 to change it.

about how much is the programmer, or the gm tech2

The Tech 2 is about 2000 bux, plus another 2k for the software, a HPPIII is about 300 bux, or you can just ask the dealer to do it for about 50 bux...

To answer your original question, you can go to 31x10 without rubbing or 32x10.5 with minor rubbing

I got a HPPIII off ebay for 60 bucks. I haven't really used it for anything, but look into that instead of paying a dealer $50.

You better hope that HPPIII was restored to it's original state. If it wasn't, then you will have to send it to Hypertech and they charge about a 100 bux..

Yeah, you have to make sure it's cleared...

I got mine off ebay, but the seller actually lived 10 minutes away. If it wasn't cleared I know where she lives door and could set the situation straight.

I've never met a woman with a custom blazer before. It was a new wierd experience.

fact is, there is no real point going to a bigger tire size.

You have to pay for new tires, the programming, installation for what, one inch more clearance?

Actually you really don't have to reprogram the ECM... I certainly didn't when I went bigger, I'm only 2.1 mph off my originals I think..

Anything other than the true speed and odometer is technically illegal and could be seen as fraud.

Not in the states....

Cop..--Son...Do you realize you were doing 2.1 mph over the limit?

Driver--No I wasn't aware, my spedometer showed 65

Cop--Those the stock tires?

Driver--No, they're about an inch and a half to 2" over stock--

Cop--Son...You're doin time..

I personally dont realy care if my speedo is of a couple mph. I went from 205/75/15 to 235/75/15 on my s-10 and that really didnt change the speedo that much at all. They rubbed a little though. I want bigger tires b/c it looks better. It needs to look like a 4x4 instead of a soccer mom suv and those 235's just dont cut it. Im also not really into the street look... If it was illegal for your speedo to be off then there would be so many people with older vehicles in jail right now. The worst that could happen is a speeding ticket and i seriously doubt a cop is gonna give me a ticket for doing 2mph over. That is if im doing the speed limit.:)

Be glad you don't live in my town. We have two new state cops that will stop you for less than 5 over and if your truck isn't bone stock, they check bumpers hight and tire width.

Ok i put off getting tires until now. I have talked to numerous tires shops and they all say 30x9.50x15 wont fit without rubbing. So i asked if there was something in between the stock size and the 30's. Nobody knows anything. There is surely an all terrain(not all season!) that is bigger that stock i could put in there?

Ok i did some checking and the only other all terrain tire out there between those two sizes are a 265x70x15. About the same size as 30's but a little smaller. Looks like it would fit so im gonna take it to the tire shop and give it a try this afternoon..... How much does it cost to get my computer reprogrammed at the dealership? Anyone ever done this?

I could "NOT" fit 31x10.5x15 on my truck. 98LT They rubbed from the second they were installed and the dealer took them off and put the 30x9.5x15 on for me. I could have tweaked the torsion bars to get them in there better but then your truck is no longer stock ride hieght and you need a alignment correct???

Correct, if you adjust the torsion bar height, you need to get an alignment.

Sorry just had to note that this is the sickest thing i have ever read, you want to get tires at Sams, how about actually buying tires warrantied by the manufacturer. Just a note, bought some from old sam once, goodyears, had a blow out not a place in sight got towed to goodyear..... Shop Guy "ah we dont cover those, you got those at Wal-Mart, we dont sell those and they are not warrantied anywhere other than walmart."

I called the dealership and they said they wouldnt reprogram the computer. I dont want to buy one of those $400 programers! Do i have any other options?

Here are some pictures of my 2004 with 30x9.5x15 BFG All Terrains. I can't tell any difference in my speedo. The ride is great. Traction is great as you can tell I am in some pretty soft sand. 31x10.5x15 would be a little tight in my opinion.

I don't worry about my odometer if the speed limit is 70 just keep your odometer at 68! Problem solved.

Ok i just got some cooper discover AT's. They are 30x9.50x15. They fit perfect with no rubbing at all. Im not sure if my speedo is off or not. I havent checked yet. It looks a hell of alot better. No more soccer mom suv for me!:)

I was passing by one of those radar things that the police set up that shows you how fast your going. I was suprised to see that my speedo was 100% correct! I was told it would throw it of by 4mph but that isnt so. Does the computer learn the new tire size and correct the speed?

Totally agree.... I dont want to look like a damn soccor mom suv!

Nope. Your new tires may not be much larger than the originals. The cop speed monitor may not be accurate. Factory speedometers are not %100 accurate, etc, etc. But the computer will not know or learn what size tire your running. How fast were you going when you passed the speed monitor? The slower your speed the less your gauge will be off.

Besides offsetting your speedometer, a larger diameter tire will also raise your gear ratio making the truck more sluggish off the line.

I was going 40 and it was correct when i speed up to 50. I went from 235x70x15 to 30x9.50x15. I have noticed it being more sluggish but i expected that.

I have a 2000 LT with 82,000 miles on it. Last month I finally replaced the stock 235x70x15 Laredos and put on 30x9.5x15 Firestone Destination ATs. I noticed a signifacant loss in fuel economy. Right around 5mpg. This is based on my calculations from my Trip Odometer and the Gas pump. I am taking them back to Tires Plus and getting 235x70 or 75s put on instead. Gotta love the 30 day ride guarantee.
