I am just posting some recall info that I found. Not all vehicles are covered by the recalls, so they may not apply to you.

Component: Exterior Lighting: Brake Lights: Switch

Defect Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH COULD DEVELOP AN OPEN CIRCUIT CONDITION THAT RESULTS IN THE STOP LAMPS AND THE REAR HAZARD LAMPS BECOMING INOPERATIVE. THE CENTER HIGH MOUNTED STOP LAMP AND TURN SIGNAL FUNCTIONS ARE NOT AFFECTED.

Consequence Summary: THE LOSS OF STOP LAMPS AND REAR HAZARD LAMPS COULD FAIL TO WARN A FOLLOWING DRIVER THAT THE VEHICLE IS BRAKING AND/OR IS STOPPED AND COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

Corrective Summary: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HAZARD SWITCH CARRIER. OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BE CONDUCTED IN TWO PHASES. THE FIRST PHASE BEGAN APRIL 15, 2002, WITH MAILINGS TO OWNERS OF 2000 AND EARLY 2001 VEHICLES. THE SECOND MAILING PHASE WILL BE TO REMAINING 2001 AND 2002 VEHICLES. I had no brake lights. Didn't know how long I drove like that but a friend informed me. Checked everything from fuses, wiring etc. All okay. Started to research and found out about recall. Called Dealer, guess what my Vin # wasn't listed under recall even though my hazard switch was the problem. DON'T THROW IN THE TOWEL JUST YET!! A new hazard switch cost around 195.00 in my area. Also lets not forget the labor. I caused quite a ruckus at dealership until they agreed to fix it under a Goodwill policy. If you have this same problem make them FIX IT!

The hazard switch fix actually runs 15 bux... I did a how-to on this... You don't need to replace the whole multifunction switch.

rlith,

You have done a lot of good how-tos that are buried in the forum. How about starting a thread with links to all the how-tos and a brief description and we can keep it bumped up near the top.

Kinda hard to do that here... But you can find most of my how-to's at www.sicgmtrucks.com (formaly www.s10planet.com) They are in the S10PLANET>>HOW-TO section... Including the hazard switch how-to... This board being not dedicated to chevy stuff makes it hard to have a a good how-to section. :(

I'm glad to know someone is willing to share a cheap fix. When I tried to get just the hazard switch was told by several people that this was sold ONLY as a complete unit.

We have an 01 Blazer and never got anything on either recall. Any info on the VIN numbers affected? Seeing the recent safety ratings of these I would sure like to find out about the seatbelts.

Just call your local dealer and have them run your VIN. They are suppose to tell you if there are any open recalls.
