Just wondering if anybody has converted their belt driven fan with an electric set up. My fan roars sometimes and seems to use up a lot of power. Does it help gas mileage to switch? And how much did it cost? Where is a good place to buy?(96 2-dr s-10 w/4.3)

Sounds like you just have a bad clutch on your fan.

I used a Ford Taurus dual speed e-fan, they work great... Easy to install. You do free up a couple of ponies and your miledge will increase from 1-3 mpg... Very worth while mod...You can pick them up for less than 30 bux in most bone yards... And the jet sound goes away! :smokin:

All you need is a new fan clutch.

There is no need for a e-fan seeing the fan clutch releases when you are driving along anyways.

The only real time it engages is at low rpms and at idle.

That's somewhat untrue...a clutch fan drags on the engine regardless if it's engaged or not... This is physics 101...The weight alone (about 15 pounds) puts a drag on it even though it's balanced. So getting rid of it is most certainly a benifit... Less weight, no drag ever= free up some ponies, a slight increase in gas miledge

the horsepower gain or loss is minimal, but the weight of the fan/clutch off the waterpump may very well be worth it,it sure is a bich trying to replace that one.(especialy in the winter)
