Erratic Oil Pressure Gauge

I was driving down the road a few days ago and I started hearing a clicking from the dashboard. I looked at the gauge for the oil pressure and it was jumping from the top to the bottom so hard it was causing a clicking noise. I checked the oil immediatly and all was fine. Started driving again and it stopped. A few days later it started up again. Just to be safe I had the oil changed and everything was ok there. It seems to only do this every once in a while and only for a few miles and then stops. Any ideas?
Thanks

PS This is an 89 S10 4.3 ltr

Sounds like a broken wire or bad sender. I would replace the sender and hope for the best.

Amen! The sending unit should be located on the back of the engine by the distributor.

my 97 is having an issue like this i think.

when i am on the freeway, all is well. when I am slowing down to stop at light, the Check Gauage light flickers on the last part of deceleration and then comes on when I am stopped. I noticed that my oil pressure registers in the red (0) when i am just idling there. When I accelerate again, it goes back to normal.

Would this be a sending unit issue as well? I just called the local autozone and they tell me either a 20 dollar part will fix it or its a sign of worn engine.

If the motor is quiet, that would be a good place to start.
