I own a 2001 Prizm. The check engine light came on in DEc, 2004. I read the code as P0171, Fuel injection system lean. I cleared the code by removing the EFI fuse under the hood. I added a container of "Gas cleaner. All was OK until last week. Check engine light can on when I was driver on the high and accelerating. I smelled fuel. Checked the code at home and again it read P0171, Fuel injection system lean.
Does any one have any suggestion what the problem can be?

Help

Thanks

If you smell fuel I'm guessing a fuel leak between the tank and injectors. If there is no leak, replace the filter. The code will continue until the situation is repaired

I only smell the fuel when the check engine light comes on. I check the code and then reset the computer by removing the EFI fuse.
After I smell the fuel and the check engine light comes on, after a few minutes the smell goes away. Again, this condition seems to ocur when the outside ambient is 70 F, If it is less the 50F, the check engine light has never come on. Since the fuel filter is in the gas tank, do you have any suggestions on how to remove it? I have to remove the rear seat to go toit. If I then open the cover, the fuel smell will get into the inside of the car. Is there any way to prevent the fuel oder from geting into the car?

Thanks

open all windows and use a fan to circulate the air through the car to help keep the gas smell to a minimum.

Well then it isn't the filter making the smell if the filter is inside the tank. It would seem that there may be a leak in the line between the tank and the actual injectors ports, canister perge system, or associated vacuum lines.

Just becareful when working with fuel vapors present

Brought my Prizm into the local Chevelot dealer on 3/11/03.
Dealer told me that the problem was a bad fuel pump.
He replace the fuel pump and the fuel filter. Since the fuel filter is inside the gas tank as is the fuel pump, might as well replace the fuel filter also.

The next day on 3/12/05 the check engine light came on again.
That sunday, I checked the trouble code. It was again P0171.

Monday brought the prizm back to the chevelot dealer.
This time he replaced the gasket that seals the fuel pump into the gas tank. After charging me over $700.00 to replace the fuel pump and fuel, he replaced the gasket for free.

The dealer should have replaced the gasket when they replaced the fuel pump.
Since the gasket was replaced, the weather in Texas has been in the 50F. I will have to wait until the weather is hotter to tell you if this fixes my problem.

I will post in two week the results.
