I've been noticing for awhile that my truck has a heavy fuel smell coming from the exhaust area (tailpipe)..i can smell it when I got the windows down and driving...its starting to drive me crazy cause i cant get fresh air without the smell of gas...i had someone hold the brake and hit the gas pedal to make sure i knew where the smell was coming from and it is def coming from the tailpipe area...im guessing from the tailpipe itself. Any ideas on what could be causing this heavy gas smell...no computer codes. Thanks

Are you smelling raw gas or burnt gas? Isn't this the same truck that was dumping the raw fuel out of the gas tank after the fill-up? Did you ever get the tank fixed? What is your gas milage? When was the last time you tuned this beast up?

Uh whats the difference in smell of raw and burnt gas....i bought the car used in dec....i haven't got a tune up since ive had it and dont know the last time it was tuned up...yes i was the one with the post on leaking gas....i still haven't found a leak, but i checked for leaking after driving and everything was dry....its weird it'll only dump gas out randomly...i put some gas in today and it was fine ....maybe about 6 gallons...but yeah i plan on getting a tuneup this weekend cause i think my ignition timing is off by alot cause of another on going problem i have.

Your CPI unit is probably leaking like a sieve and dumping fuel... Check your oil as well... Gas in oil will ruin your bearings

Anybody should be able to tell the difference.

Reading your past post about losing gas out the top of the tank, you have two possible problems.

#1. The round gasket between the fuel pump assembly and the top of the tank is shot.

#2. The 3" (approx) rubber hose between the filler tube and gas tank has a leak or bad clamp.

Check to see that the poppets are seated properly. Secondly, did you check to see if your oil had gas in it? If your previous injector had started dumping fuel some of it could have gotten in to the crank case and be causing the gas smell (and killing your bearings)

Yip, always replace the oil after a CPI change.

Also, did you install the nut kit properly with the new o-rings?

Yep new O rings...pressure tested it also...about 10 times to make sure everything was connected tightly..I'll replace the oil today and see what that does...

I found a recall on my model truck and called the dealer to see if I was in the recall and guess what I am.

Make : CHEVROLET Model : S10 Year : 1994
Manufacturer : GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 94V014000 Recall Date : JAN 24, 1994
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 117200
Summary:
THE FUEL TANK FILLER PIPES WERE NOT MANUFACTURED TO SPECIFICATION WHICH CAUSED LOSS OF FUEL BETWEEN THE FUEL TANK FILLER PIPE AND THE VENT TUBE DURING A TEST. THE LOSS OF FUEL WAS IN EXCESS OF THE AMOUNT PERMITTED BY FMVSS NO. 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY."
Consequence:
CONSEQUENCE OF NON-COMPLIANCE: IF A VEHICLE CRASH WERE TO OCCUR, IT MAY CAUSE THE JOINT BETWEEN THE FUEL TANK FILLER PIPES AND THE VENT TUBE TO CRACK. IF THE VEHICLE OVERTURNED, FUEL LEAKAGE WOULD OCCUR, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A POST-CRASH FIRE.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL FILLER PIPE ON THESE VEHICLES.
Notes:
SYSTEM: FUEL; FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY; PIPE; FILLER; NECK. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS. NOTE: IF YOUR VEHICLE IS PRESENTED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND THE REMEDY IS NOT PROVIDED WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME AND FREE OF CHARGE OR THE REMEDY DOES NOT CORRECT THE DEFECT OR NONCOMPLIANCE, PLEASE CONTACT CHEVROLET SERVICE CENTER AT 1-800-222-1020 OR GMC SERVICE CENTER AT 1-313-456-4547. ALSO, CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-800-424-9393.

Going to get it fixed monday. :-D

Whoa, make sure it is the problem.

Just because there is a service bulletin doesn't mean that is what is causing gas to come out your exhaust.

Then post it in that thread and not an unrelated thread like this one.
