It depends: '93 with OBD1: some can blink the light:

Several others relative to brakes /ABS require the scan tool.

LMP,

Just wanted to let you know that the link didn't work.

I believe it should be:

Paul,

That is the OLD system for the diagnostic / error code storage / reporting. I believe the switch to OBD-2 (or OBD-II) was somewhere around 1996.

Anyway, the older system used a simple "test plug" that was inserted in the connector and you could then turn the key on and "read" the codes (the check engine light would flash in sequence). At least that's the way it worked on my old car.

The newer system actually has a serial "communications bus" to the vehicle & computer and can monitor a whole bunch of systems in your car. Do a search for "OBD-2" and you will probably find all you need to know about the system.

What model year is your vehicle?

OK Greg you found it the right way...sorry for the inversion, I had not checked out.
Anyway, all that I have scanned from my '93 service manual can be browsed through at
www.avigex.ca/xport

ANd indeed, as Greg explained, OBD stands for On Board Diagnostic. All cars use the 2nd version now, but in '93 , Transport was on the 1st version.
INstructions for getting the codes out :
jump terminals A and B in the diagnostic plug
www.avigex.ca/xport/plug.jpg
TUrn Key on
Read the light codes, the 1st one being 12 (1 blink then 2) to indicate diagnostic mode and then all stored error codes come next.

Greg

it's a 3.8 l 1993 and I don't if the codes will give the solution
for the problem Ihave with the injectors and the fuel pump
WhenI put the key on , the pump is make a noise and normally stop , but now it doesn't stop and the injectors are cliking with no stop, of course the engine doesn't start!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good day

I guess at one time the battery was completely disconnected from the system for a little while....whick normally evacuates all previously stored codes.
But after you get some late codes reading, I would in fact totally disconnect the battery, turn the lights on (they wil not light up...) to discharge any residual charge, and then connect the battery back to reinitialise the computer....hoping it might solve the errraic behaviour.
