Steering Pump Going Bad? silveradoking 02-22-2005, 07:29 PM
When I come to turn my silvy on...I let it idle for about a few minutes....and during this time I here some kind of noise like a, 'ehhh ehhhh....coming from the pump area.. I thought it was air in the system...and did the procedure to get the air out....When I turn my steering wheel the noise gets a tad louder....I don't know what to do...How does a steering pump burn out....what kind of noise does it make? Or is there something I can do to help solve this problem...? I had recently changed the fluid, but I know I did everything correctly...what could be wrong? nineball481 02-22-2005, 09:49 PM Is it possible that you have a leak? The pump can go bad. abaird 02-22-2005, 11:04 PM the pump is probably bad. Older ford trucks were notorios for pumps going out and the one on my 92 f150 did the same as what you described. It didn't leak or anything, just went bad. Don't be fooled if you think your truck is too new either my buddy had one go out on a 2002 w/ under 30,000 miles. Nineball481, that is a sweet truck! silveradoking 02-22-2005, 11:08 PM No, I do not have a leak... Do you mean that if I had a leak, then the pump would go bad? What do you think is it that is making the noise? The same noise when turning, even moving it like half inch it makes the same noise.... or let me give a better example...you should knoww now.... when you turn the steering wheel all the way, let's say to the left...right before the stop... or even right at the stop... that's is the noise I am getting when I turn my truck on for the day.... '00Z71,5.3RcabLbed 02-22-2005, 11:23 PM My 2000 had a similar problem if you recall (00 stiff steering at idle), I took it back to the dealer and a new pump fixed the problem. dr_of_lovephd 02-23-2005, 11:06 AM The noise you are discribing could be the pump going bad. But if the fluid is low, it can make the same noise. Have you noticed any problems steering at low speed or when you're at a complete stop? If it is harder to turn the wheels now, then it is probably the pump. But double check the fluid to make sure. chuck16 02-23-2005, 11:44 AM According to the previous owner of my truck, the last Power Steering pump in this truck "cherry-bombed" it's way apart. The pump broke and PS fluid went everywhere. Still 6 months later and I'm trying to get fluid off the Suspension. Replace your Pump before it does the same thing. nineball481 02-23-2005, 03:54 PM Nineball481, that is a sweet truck! I appreciate the compliment. I need to up date my picture. Since the current picture, I have removed badging and added color matched door handles. silveradoking 02-23-2005, 06:37 PM Thanks a lot for the info....I thought it was the pump, butwasn't that sure...Any idea how much the pump's run for, and where can I find the best deal?
