problem intake fix with edelbrock?

Hey guys I am having the problem with the strong gas smell from the exhaust, and crappy gas milage, and computer light keeps coming on. I think I remember reading it was something with the intake manifold, or raw fuel being dumped into the intake pleneum from a bad valve or something?
Anyways, would an aftermarket intake manifold help, like the one from summitracing part number, Edelbrock Performer 4.3L T.B.I. V6 Intake Manifolds. Or maybe some other aftermarket part to get away from the apparent problematic 94-95 4.3L.
I am stationed overseas and cannot get the parts but summit ships over here. I got 6MPG on my last tank, granted I was doing alot of 4 wheeling, but it should not be that bad. Now before anyone asks the questions about tune ups and such, I just did a complete tune up with all accel stuff for ignition, royal purple oil, air filter, fuel filter and such. Is the EGR valve something I can change myself and where can I get one that is mail order? Also, new exhaust was put on, I did not change the O-2 but I want to find one (it looks brand new but I know that does not mean squat), once again it has to mail order. I really like this truck, but it is not going to last very long in my garage with this milage, my blown 66 elcamino gets better gas milage. Thanks

one more thing, is the 94 4.3L a vortec or not, summit told me yesterday that vortecs did not start until 95, but my engine says vortec on the top.

First, don't just change the EGR valve. Most of the time, the problem with it is because a piece of carbon is caught in the pintle. It just needs to be cleaned along with the ports.
Second, there is no problem with the intake manifold, the problem lies within. Which is to say, inside the intake is the injector, regulator, and the fuel feed lines. These have a tendency to leak, which causes poor gas milage and usually an extended crank before starting.

I hear that about the cranking and running bad and I have NONE of that. I don't know if it is because of the tune up stuff but the truck runs great, except for the bad gas milage! I run it on the autobahn, in town, four wheelin, it runs and starts great but dont know whats up. I just went home and disconnected the neg batt, and took out the ecm fuses, let it sit then re-installed like Blazer LT said to do in a previous thread, not sure what this does but anything is worth a try, and of course this is an excuse to the wife to buy more aftermarket stuff! I would rather fix this problem though because it is a rather reliable vehicle.

To check if you have the HO motor or not, look at th e8th letter of your VIN, if it's a W you have the full vortec, if it's a Z then you have TBI with vortec heads. That said... If you have CPI pull the plenum and look for washing... If the passenger side is washed you have a bad CPI unit, if the driver's side is washed, you have a bad nut kit. If you replace the CPI replace the nut kit as a matter of course.

If you have the Z, look down your throttle body, and rev the motor. Watch the spray pattern from the injectors. If they are spraying a nice cone pattern, they're fine, if they are dripping, then they should be replaced.

It is the W series

just read that the trouble code I was getting for the EVAP VENT BLOCKED has a symptom of a strong gas odor inside the cab. Just FYI, not sure if it applies to you or not

It is the W series

You have CPI then. Pull the upper plenum and check for signs of washing as I outlined above.

It is the W series

Remove the top vortec nameplate and then remove the top round IMTV valve and take a flashlight and lok down and look for washed area that will look a golden color. Also look for pools of fuel and the smell of gas.

Also, smell your oil dipdtick and smell for gas.

I can almost guarantee your CPI injector is shot and you will have to replace it.

Best to replace the nut kit, CPI injector and everything if you do it.

Yep, this looks like this is the problem! Now, where can I get the parts to fix it? It has to be mail order cause I am stationed in Germany and I have to do the mail order thing over here!!!

www.gmpartsdirect.com or www.advanceautoparts.com for the CPI unit, www.gmpartsdirect.com for the nut kit (call your hometown chevy dealer for the part numbers if you can, I don't have them off hand)

Yip, you will need a upper plenum gasket, a new CPI injector and a new nut kit.

The nut kit is the internal fuel line kit. Trust me, replace it at the same time so everything is new so you won't have to do it again.

Link to a forum thread with numerous help threads , diagrams, photos and guides. You will have to register but it is well worth the 30 seconds to do so.
