1999, 3.1L. This car has automatic transmission. It is making like a wailing noise. When I start the car the noise is not there, after one or two seconds the sound starts. I was trying to track down where the sound is coming from; I think it comes from the transmission. I can hear the sound the best when the car is idling, but it is there when I drive the car. When is press the gas pedal quickly the sound goes away for a while and comes back. It doesn't make any difference if I use P, R, N, D, 3, 2 or 1. The sound remains the same.

I don't know if automatic transmission has a pump, the sound is like a cavitation sound? Maybe one of the bearings is bad? Any ideas?

What could cause this sound in the transmission?
How could I fix it?

PS. I already checked the brake booster and the power steering, they are not making the sound…

Unplug and block the vacuum line to the modulator and see if the sound goes away.

Have occaisionally heard damaged modulators really wail.

more than likely the pump bearing is wasted. you probally dont have a modulator on your car. but if you do its a 4T60E if you dont its a 4T65E
