How do you know it is trying to engage 4x4?

i not familiar with electric shift. i have manual levers and vacuum switch/lines. but sounds like cable to front diff from vacuum diaphram is sticking bit and not all way back in diff. when ingaged vacuum diafram pulls in pulling cable. for quick fix i guess disconnect locking clip at diafram that goes thru cable end connection to diafram shaft. later check that diafram is coming all way out when off and cable moving back too. is sticking my guess is where cable enters diff where there is removable housing covering thick cable shaft/oil seal ... try lubing that and be sure to use rtv self-curing gasket selant there between hopusing and diff.

the front axle is clicking & you can put it in 4 wheel and it will quiet.

That doesn't mean the 4x4 was trying to engage.

That means you have some play in that tire's driveline and when you put it in 4x4 the play is removed.

the clicking noise sound's just like the early GM automatic hubs did when they would get dirty.

CV joint has a torn boot probably allowing sand in.

CV joint could be toast.

Check it out.

A tall tale sign is clicking so I would agree with you on this one.
