PO410 (airpump) problems

I had this code 1.5 years ago and replaced the airpump
with one from the boneyard to fix it. The 30 amp fuse for
it near the battery kept blowing.
Now, right before inspection sticker time the same thing happened.
I haven't replaced the pump yet.
Is this a normal problem with these pumps? Or is it something other
than pump life causing the problem.
Is there a way to add a ballast resistor to fool the system that the
pump is there?

The AIR pump adds air to the exhaust stream to lower emissions. It does this by taking in outside air and pumping it through two one-way check valves into each bank of the exhaust.
About 90% of the time that this code is set, the one-way check valves have worn out or failed and allow water (which occurs naturally in the exhaust) back into the pump. In any cold climate, especially in the northeast with higher humidity, this water may be more excessive. The water partially fills the AIR pump, it can then freeze. When the PCM commands the pump on, if the pump is frozen it cannot turn, thus overloading the circuit and "popping" the fuse.
As far as the location of the fuse, it is in the right front fender well beside the battery, and in front of the horn there.
Sometimes replacing the fuse will fix all your problems and you are all set until next winter when it all happens again.
Also, sometimes water is allowed to enter the pump through the intake side of the system (just a 5/8" hose behind the fan shroud) and ruins the system that way. -I'll talk about that in a moment.
GM says that when this system failure occurs due to water intrusion, the pump MUST be replaced. I have had decent luck just blowing the pump out with direct power provided by a test bettery out of the vehicle, and saving the customer some $$$ :thumbsup:
GM has also released a remote air intake kit that includes a longer 5/8" hose, a control solenoid, and a one-way check valve to eliminate most possibility of water intrusion.
Like I said before, sometimes just blowing out the motor and replacing the fuse will solve your problem. BUT, to truly repair the problem correctly the AIR pump, the fuse, and the exhaust check valves must be replaced, and the remote air intake kit must be installed. :banghead: $$$
I have much experience with this AIR system. Here in the northeast it is a BIG problem, and we have replaced at least 100 AIR pumps in the last 2 years or so.
If your vehicle is still under warranty, then you are lucky. --> The exhaust check valves usually wear out after 3-4 years thus, putting most vehicles out of warranty coverage. :sly:
Hope this explains the infamous (at least here in the northeast) P0410.

No, you can't fool the system. When the computer turns on the AIR pump, it looks at the O2 sensor for a change in readings. If it doesn't see the change, it figures that something is wrong and BINGO check engine light. It's something that can be seen in action on a scanner.

This just happened to me a few months ago. My friend works at a dealer and as soon as I said my SES light came on with that code, he got the parts. The fix (per the TSB, I guess) is to replace the pump, the fuse, and the hose. There is a new hose that prevents water from splashing up and getting iin the pump and freezing. The pump freezes, blows the fuse and sets the light on. Parts cost me $150 or so, GM list is probably $200. It took 45 minutes to fix. You could probably go to the parts counter and a knowledgeble parts guy will know all the parts.

Here's a kicker to my now new P0410 code issue I just got last week. I got the code, found these threads regarding the code, then ran right out and purchased a new pump & hose from my local dealer (Pump was $165 & hose was &65 (I think)) I checked the fuse and it was good.. Anyhow I ain't had the time to replace the parts yet and have driven the truck 100 miles or so with the check engine light lit. The truck then sat for a week. Today I started the truck & the check engine light was not lit. I cleared the code and after about 25 miles it ain't come back. Can I expect the code to return?? Or what else woulda caused the code?? Wondering if I should try to return the new pump & hose....

Did you check both fuses? There's a 10 amp mini fuse and a 30 amp maxi fuse.

Yes I did check both fuses & both were good. I drove the truck another 60 miles last night and still the code did not come back. I'd rather not save the parts if not needed. Hope the dealer doesn't charge a restocking fee.

Here's another kicker. The dealer don't take electrical parts returns so guess I got an extra brand new secondary air pump sittin on the self. I'll stare at it a while then it'll go on ebay..............
