Spark plug access on 93 5.7L E150

I changed 6 on my 8 plugs today. I thought I could access the 3 and 4 plug thru the wheel well by removing a panel (like my explorer). The wheel well is all structure :banghead: . Do I have to pull the alternator?
Any experienced help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Bill

Nope, remove the doghouse.

If by doghouse you mean the interior access housing, it was off. That is how I accessed the 6 plugs I have changed. I need to get to the 2 on the forward right of the engine. They are angled forward on the right (back on the left) and I cannot get to them from the interior access because they are to far forward and the space between the head and access hole is to tight. Plus I have two 1-inch hoses right at the edge of the access hole. I tried to get my smallest ratchet in the space between the head and opening and could not. Special tool?

I just ran into the same problem on my newly aquired '91 E350. I had a warranty issue and had the dealer's mech put them in, but never got a chance to ask their mech how he did it. Would be nice to know for future maintenence.

Chilton manual sez 'jack up the front end' but nothing further on removal.

the easiest way to get to those two plugs is to remove the alternator. Sounds like a lot but it really isn't and the job is a whole lot nicer to complete. Just make sure to disconnect the battery first. the alternator has 12v to it all the time and doesn't like it when it is shorted out.
