'97 Intrepid transmission problem

Hi,
I just took my '97 Intrepid out for a ride and ended up with a transmission problem a few miles from home. The engine was running fine but it was like I lost the transmission completely. I pulled over, shut it down and restarted it a bunch of times. I can get it to go into D1 using the Auto Stick but if I try to shift into D2 I lose the transmission again. I have to shut it down, start it up again and shift into the Auto Stick mode to get it to go anywhere (in D1, only). I have no reverse and can't seem to get it to run at all unless I use the Auto Stick. The fluid level seems fine and I tried changing the 5A fuse that controls the transmission with no success. Could this be a clutch plate problem? Any suggestions before I have it towed to my mechanic? Thanks.

I doubt that you have a major transmission problem, sounds like you shift solenoid assembly might have failed.

Thanks FREAKnasty82.
Someone else suggested it might be a sensor. I thought the Check Engine Light would come on if a sensor was bad but maybe not.

yeah, your check engine light would light up if the sensor was bad, and would just go into default or limp mode staying in second gear, but since that didn't happen in your case, it definetly sounds like a solenoid assembly failure.
