Vehicle is a 2001 S-10 with auto trans with the 4.3L engine. I bought this truck a little over a year ago and was told that the one big problem that they had was the check engine would come on every 10,000 miles or so. It had 9,900 miles on it when I bought it and sure enough the check engine light came on at the 10,500 mile mark. It was under warranty so my bill was $0. Now with 22,000 miles on it the check engine light is on once again. What I would like to know is there a good scanner out there that one could buy and fix this myself? My best guess is if I took it to the dealer the bill would be at least $250. On my 93 Dodge Spirit you can actually check the fault codes by counting the times the check engine light blinks. Over the year's i've done this and it always has been a bad 02 sensor. Now I also own a 2002 Envoy so I would assume that if there is a good scanner out there it should work on the Envoy. Can you people help me out here? Thanks! John

Autozone will check the codes for free.

The SES should not come on every 10k unless there is an actual problem... As said above, stop at autozone and have them pull the code. When the counter creature scans the code, insist that you want to look at the scanner. Actually write down the code (p0xxx) so you know exactly what it is, not what the monkey tells you it is.
