92 S-10 4x4 oil filter housing

Has anyone had the oil filter housing to leak where the oil lines attach to the front of the oil filter housing on a 92 S-10 Blazer 4X4 with the remote oil filter.

Wondering should I replace the whole housing, are just try and replace the seal at the front. Replacing the seal looks pretty simple, but would like to hear from someone who has.

You sure it is leaking only there where it attaches to the remote oil filer assembly, or is it leaking from the crinp fittings?

yes, most likely is tension lost over time on the crimp clamps ?

my oil filter housing is attached to block in 2.8 v6. thought it worth mentioning i learned hard way from when oil filter was so tight and i had trouble gettign it to turn to get off ... i found no room for normal long handle filter ring clamp ... tried cheap plastic filter end socket (too thick unless i had thought to jack motor up bit) ... resorted to stick and hammer on outer grooved filter edges to get it started turning ... dum i know now ... got it off ... after changing found oil spraying which turned out to be that the banging had not damaged the housing but broke the bond of required rtv gasket goop which i was told is needed in addition to gasket. so if you chnage gasket you may be well advised to also apply that gasket goop on both sides, torque bolts and wait 1/2 day for it to set and permanent seal against high pressure oil pump creates.

ofcoures like blazerlt said, connections of lines may just need attention.

My 89 is leaking on the crimp where the metal meets the flex, I cant find one in a local junk yard and there is not enough clearance on the block to remove and just mount the oil filter there. I have oil absorbant padding there to catch mine because of the amount of flow

Yes, I am positive it is leaking from where the one bolt connects the 2 oil line which run from the front of the oil filter to the radiator.

At first I thought it was one of the lines. But I took Dawn dish detergent sprayed on and around the oil filter and housing and cleaned all the oil mess off with a brush and rag.

After cleaning it off I thought it was the filter, changed it and it still was seeping oil. Took an inspection mirror and looked it over very close, that is the only way one can get a look at the underside of the filter and housing, and it is seeping from where that block bolts on front of the filter housing where the 2 front oil lines bolt on the filter housing with 1 bolt. Seems they must be a seal under it.

One person had told me the that the oil lines were bad about leaking where they are crimped on these 4x4 with the remote oil filter, I was quite suprised to see the oil seeping out from between where the front oil lines connect to the filter housing.

When he told me that I nearly went and got me all new oil lines, but something told me from my experience as a jet engine mechanic in the Air Force that I had better take a close look at it before doing anything or I might spend money on the wrong thing and still have an oil leak and I would be feeling like this.

Edited at 12:24 Arkansas time.

I called the local Chevrolet dealership, which the parts manager is a friend of mine. He told me it is quite common for one of these seals where the oil lines hook to the filter housing to leak on remote oil filters on 4x4 Chevy's.

He said he knew of several who had replaced the oil lines to find out all they needed to do was replace the seals where the lines hook to the oil filter housing, that they always keep these seals in stock because of that.

So I am headed to town in a bit to get these seals and see if I can't stop this nasty oil leak, the only one I have had on this S-10 Blazer 4x4 with 138,000 miles since I bought in new in early 1992.

Yea, you should be able to just replace the washers and be on your happy way.

That thing had 2 o-rings under it, they had gone flat and thus letting oil seap out.

It took longer to get the air breather and such out of the way than it did to replace the o-rings. $1.38 and the leak is now fixed.

Thought I had the oil leak fixed, but there is was leaking again.

Right out of where the front oil lines hook up to the filter housing.

I took it back off, the 2 new o-rings looked as if they had been in there 13 years like the original o-rings that came out, they were completely flatten out.

So I used some of that red high temp silicone along with the o-rings and put it back together. Them I drove it down the highway and got it all warmed up. When I got home it seems as if that took care of it. So far it is dry, hopefully it will stay that way.

Use the poper washer and don't use silicone.

Why not use silcone, the way it is made it is very easy to keep from getting any silcone in the line itself.

Which I used both of the seals along with silcone to be sure I got it sealed off good.

And besides that, I have alreay used the silcone and it seems not to be leaking any more.

Stop arguing with me and use the proper washers to fix the leak, not slapping silicone on it which is not meant to be used with anything exposed to your oil.

Do the job tight with the right parts.

Now I am not arguing with you on this, I had the proper oil ring that the Chevy book called for to go in this fitting, the size of it matched the old one perfect, except they were new.

It was a perfect size. When I put it in and held it up to it, it looked as if when I tightened it down it would make a perfect seal.

But it did not. Maybe it was a bad o-ring's! If I had of gone back to the Chevy place all I would have gotten is 2 more 0-ring's as he had given me the first trip, the parts man said he had 8 of them.

I did leave the o-ring's in when I added the Permatex high-temp RTV silicone Gasket Maker. Shall keep and eye on it, but as of now, no oil leaks!

there are 2 places it will leak. one is from the hose ,there is a relief hole in the aluminum or it will leak from the o rings at the connection to the oil cooler. you can just replace the o rings if thisis where the leak is at.
If the leak is coming out of the small oil relief hole near the end of the rubber ,The hose will have to be replaced.

Hi, Jerry Look at were the filter adapt. mounts to the block. There is a o,ring that leaks there and drips down on every thing, Two bolts under the oil filter takes it off. O,ring will be brittle and break into with your hands, bet that,s your leak,Billy

I got my oil filter leaks fixed. The Permatex high-temp RTV silicone Gasket Maker I put on the o-ring on the side going to the oil cooler fixed it, has not leaked since.

But right after that, the in line on the other side started leaking as well. I went to the Chevy house, got a new o-ring for it, installed it, it leaked. Took it back out, put Permatex high-temp RTV silicone Gasket Maker and it has not leaked since.

That was way back in February of this year. Its now November and several miles later and it is still holding, no oil leaks.

Chevy place must have had some bad o-rings.

I did check the housing to be sure it was not cracked.

Just had to do the same thing on my 2.8L, only I had to drive an hour per direction just to get the right o-rings.
That's the fun part of small town life.

They didn't even charge me for the o-ring, and it's leak free.
