I recently got this car for a winter ride so I could keep my Mustang garaged. Here is some history on the car. It was my grandmothers vehicle and she had problems with something draining the battery. She had a new alt and battery installed, problem persisted. I've had the car about a month now and no problems with that. My guess is that it was going dead due to not being driven frequently. Anyway, when I got the car I changed the fuel filter, car & rotor, air filter and PCV valve. I repaired a few broken/not connected vacuum lines. The car has a carb'd 4.1 engine with about 128,000 miles. Here is the newest problem:

When it starts out in 1st and goes up thru the gears as it hits drive/over drive it starts stumbling and stalls. Usually around 40-50 MPH. If you bump it up to neutral and give it gas it sputters for a sec then revs. I checked the tranny fluid and it's ok. I did find a vac line that was disconnected on the carb, fixed it and the problem is still there. I've also tried spraying carb cleaner down the carb. I just filled it up with Sunoco 93 and 1 can of dry gas. Thinking possible fuel line freeze. A friend of mine scanned it and it threw a 44 code for TPS. Well the car is carb'd so there is no TPS. I'm thinking since the car sat alot and it's 22 yrs old that the fuel pump could be the suspect part. Any ideas?

Sorry for the knovel lol

Code 44 means: Lean Exhaust

Check the ECM wiring connections. Check for vacuum leaks at the hoses and intake manifold gasket.
Sounds like the problem is with the carberator.

Replaced the fuel pump tonight. Seems to be fine now. Thanks for the info.

Started doing the surging thing again last night. I think I'll get the carb rebuilt and see if that helps.
