my taurus started to leak antifreeze but never over heated until yesterday. the gauge rose up and down but never read hot. could this be a stuck thermostat

Have you fixed your leak yet?

Did the leak give you a clue that an overheat was in your future? Thermostats usually fail to default open.

It could be you have a LEAK and are low in coolant.
