Tranny fluid/filter changeSpice137 02-12-2005, 08:32 AM I have a 99 dodge ram. I called a local repair shop for a tranny fluid flush and fill and a filter change. I was told that, due to the machine they use to flush the system, there is no need to change the filter. Should I go with this or does the filter need to be changed regardless? Thanks for any opinions. john m 02-12-2005, 10:05 PM I have a 97 Ram and just had the fluid and filter changed. I like the idea of flushing out all of the old fluid and replacing it but what about the trash and such that has already been caught by the old filter? What happens to it? How is it removed? Anybody know? Thanks wafrederick 02-12-2005, 11:11 PM Do not have the flush done,a big no no.The trash gets in the valve body and causes shifting problems even the flush gets properly done.My father knows a guy that owns his own transmission shop that cleans valve bodies because of flushing the transmission even properly done. The best thing you can do to a transmission is to change the fluid and filter. That transmission holds about 6-8 quarts of transmission fluid. My advice, change the transmission fluid and filter. littlebit 02-13-2005, 02:58 AM Do not have the flush done,a big no no.The trash gets in the valve body and causes shifting problems even the flush gets properly done.My father knows a guy that owns his own transmission shop that cleans valve bodies because of flushing the transmission even properly done. The best thing you can do to a transmission is to change the fluid and filter. That transmission holds about 6-8 quarts of transmission fluid. My advice, change the transmission fluid and filter. The Haynes manual says a transmission drain and refill holds 4 quarts, and a dry fill holds 9 to 16.5 quarts depending on model and options. :2cents: who fan 02-13-2005, 08:48 AM Take it to a Chrysler dealer to have it done or do it yourself. Most independent shops use Dextron as a universal Fluid ( Dont Do IT) Most Chrysler transmissions use ATF+3 or 4. theFREAKnasty82 02-14-2005, 01:35 AM I rebuild transmissions and a flush of the transmission is needed b/c the nastiest and dirtiest of the fluid gets caught in the torque converter and tranny cooler. Unless you want take out your radiator and pull out the transmission just to drain the torque converter, a tranny flush is good; only if the fluid hasn't been changed regularly. Make sure that at 30,000 you get your tranny fluid changed and a new filter. theFREAKnasty82 02-14-2005, 01:38 AM Here's the TSB for the right tranny fluid to use in your truck: NUMBER: 21-006-01 GROUP: Transmission DATE: Jun. 29, 2001 THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21-16-99, DATED OCTOBER 22, 1999, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES AND NOTED IN THE 1999 TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN MANUAL (PUBLICATION NO. 81-699-00004). DISCUSSION: A new transmission fluid (ATF+4(R) - Type 9602) has been developed and is being used as factory fill for all vehicles with Chrysler automatic transmissions. Until now, vehicles originally filled with ATF+2 or ATF+3 were to be serviced with ATF+3. Effective immediately, it is recommended that all vehicles with Chrysler automatic transmissions except for 1999 and earlier minivans be serviced with ATF+4(R). ATF+3 should continue to be used for 1999 and earlier minivans because of the potential for torque converter shudder during break in. For all other applications the ATF+4(R) fluid offers significant benefits as outlined below. NOTE :ATF+4(R) MUST ALWAYS BE USED IN VEHICLES THAT WERE ORIGINALLY FILLED WITH ATF+4(R). NOTE :SERVICE INTERVALS DO NOT CHANGE. THE SERVICE INTERVAL CURRENTLY IN EFFECT FOR A GIVEN VEHICLE SHOULD CONTINUE TO BE FOLLOWED. NOTE :ATF+4(R) IS COMPATIBLE WITH ATF+3 AND CAN BE USED TO TOP OFF VEHICLES THAT CURRENTLY HAVE ATF+2 OR ATF+3. DO NOT USE ATF+2 OR ATF+3 TO TOP OFF VEHICLES THAT HAVE ATF+4(R) FLUID. BENEFITS ^ Better anti-wear properties ^ Improved rust/corrosion prevention ^ Controls oxidation ^ Eliminates deposits ^ Controls friction ^ Retains anti-foaming properties ^ Superior properties for low temperature operation FLUID COLOR Mopar ATF+4(R) is a World Class Fluid having exceptional durability. However, the red dye used in ATF+4°R is not permanent; as the fluid ages it may become darker or appear brown in color. ATF+4(R) also has a unique odor that may change with age. With ATF+4(R) fluid, color and odor are no longer indicators of fluid condition and do not support a fluid change. DCDodge 02-15-2005, 01:39 AM Thanks, the FREAKnasty82, this helps all of us. I had been curious as whether or not to use the +4 or stay with the +3 the next time I change my tranny fluid on my '97 Ram. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
