"Cop attraction" on power cars?

FYI: This is my first post! :D

My question is; as a Viper owner (or other "dream-power-car"), do you notice that cops pay extra attention to you as you drive down the road? How many speeding tickets have you got? Any stories?

unfortunatly I don't own a Viper eventhough I would do allmost anything to own one. but I do know that cops have a vendetta against one of my trucks, around here, if you have a flashy vehicle they 'pick on you"

I only have a V6 in the truck right now, but they have pulled me and my mother for doing 56 in a 55 if that gives you any clue on how they look at it.

I got a ticket in my DMC for doing 58 in a 55 MPH zone... in the middle of nowhere (no schools, businesses, houses). I knew the road well, and it was a bright sunny day. There was NO reason for this BS!

Hi Guys:

I will confirm with you that law enforcement officers pay particularly close attention to exotic cars like Vipers. Here are a couple of reasons (from several friends of mine who are cops):
- They are car nuts just like the rest of us;
- They know that if you drive one of these cars, that you are more prone to making a mistake;
- Finally, the Viper is one of the only cars that can out accelerate and out-run every single vehicle in the California Highway Patro (or any local authorities) entire vehicle arsenal like the BMW and Kawasaki bikes, the patrol cars, the helicopters and the Cessna's.

I personally have not had a ticket (moving violation) in more than 19 years. I have always driven high performance vehicles. One thing that I will say (and all of you have heard this) respect the law to the point of being anal retentive. Let the local cops drive your car if they admire it. I have let many cops drive my Viper, and they are all friends now. I have never looked atcops as the enemy.

I hope that this answers your questions.

Brad

Hmm, that's interesting about letting the local cops drive your Viper! I guess the point of that is to let them know that you're not out to hit the red lines behind their backs…

And outrunning helicopters and Cessnas? How can any car do that? It seems to me that while a car is limited to the road, air-borne units can fly in a straight line, with no obstacles. But then again, I don't know what California roads are like.

I've personally had five speeding tickets :( , and most of them was just making myself an easy target, making myself an obvious speeder.

One of the CHP guys that I let drive the Snake told me about a guy in a ZR-1 that out ran their arsenal on a banzai run up the 14 Freeay (between LA/Palmdale and Mammoth Mountain ski resort). He was hitting 185 mph on a wide open highway. He literally outran the arsenal on that day. They caught him when he stopped to fill up for gas in the middle of nowhere. The CHiP's blew right past the gas station a couple of miles before they realized what they had done. I always thought that his was an urban legend, but it ended up being true.

By the way, the top speed on the GTS is 193 mph (bone stock).

I tell the local cops that I go out of my way to obey the traffic laws, and that if they ever see my car speeding that it is probably a friend of mine doing a one time test drive or one of them (other cops). I get my rocks off when I visit the local road racing tracks several times a year. All that I ask them is to be nice to whoever s driving it.

There are only 3 blue/white GTS's in the South Bay area of LA. All the cops have to do is run a check on their computers, come to my house and cuff my butt (and impound the Snake). With odds like this, I don't have any desire to challenge the law by street racing anyone... it's just not worth losing the car over it. It's also a very bad example for my 3 young kids.

To BUFF and DMC12 and anyone else. If you ever get a ticket for anything three mph over the speed limit or under (i.e. +1, +2) and they got you on radar, CONTEST IT IN COURT. Radars can are accurate within 3 mph. I am friends with a cop and he told me this. Lasers are accurate within 2mph. Tickets like that are BS and illegitimate. I don't know if all of the other states radars and lasers are like this but they are in Ohio. Just a tip for everyone.;)

yea.... this is eatern ky..... so you can get anything written off if you know the right person..... so tickets really don't mean shit unless they're for over 15 over, OR you just let them go and not get them taken care of and miss the court date.

I've gotten PLENTY of tickets in the past, and i'm only having problems with 1 of them... and its court date is next month........

Just let a Long Beach (CA) police officer drive his kids around today in the Viper (while I attended a local Corvette show). He confirmed that the stock Snake is even faster than the NOS equipped SS Impala dragster that their police department is building for an anti-gang and anti-drug campaign.

It was the most fun that he has had in a long time.

well, I had a nice run-in with a Viper this weekend. I was sittin one of the local parking lots (with the 3 girls that had been riding around with me, and the 2 girls that were sittin with us {I felt like some sorta pimp}) and a red Viper with white stripes comes rollin down the street. I give it a few close looks and see that it has GTS-R badging with functional front and rear spoilers. he gets right beside of us and drops down a gear to slow down for the red light and then I noticed that it had the ramair hood on it, with the early Viper side exit exhaust on it. after a few times of drivin by, I was able to get him to pull in so I could find out what was up with the contradictions.......

well it came from factory as a 97 GTS coupe, then he put all the mods onto it, a total body kit with side exit exhaust (no crossovers or anything) it sounded AWESOME. with functional front valance, and the rear spoiler that gave it a BEAUTIFUL race look. then he told me that he's been through 3 transmisions, and that he's changed the rear gear, and put a lightweight clutch and flywheel in it.

he said that he had hit 160 with it on the local 4 lanes, with those type of speeds around here you don't have to worry about cops.... because without a TOP OF THE LINE race car, you WILL NOT be able to handle the turns and potholes.

needless to say I was VERY HAPPY when he actually was willing to talk in depth about the Viper. every other owner around heredoesn't realize what they have, and only knows that "it goes fayast" (said in the biggest hick accent you can do)

At the time, I was young and unfamiliar with the legal system. Now, I WANT to go to court because I know what my brain can do to defeat these retarded cops with high-school diplomas. The pen is mightier than the sword!

The funny thing was... I didn't know I was being pulled over because there was a Viper (blue with racing stripes) zipping past me at about 65 while the cop was behind me. I thought the cop was after him. I hate cops... they are dumber than shit!

I would like to edit my post on this thread. The rule actually is radar is accurate within 5 mph (not 3) and laser is accurate within 3 mph (not 2).

I'm not trying to say that all sports car owners are motorheads... but, the reality is most people who own sports cars go insane and end up doing 180 in a 100 zone (KPH, austrlian)... the cops pay more attention to spaorts cars coz they're more likely to speed and/or be stupid...

Many years ago I saw a Nevada police car that was a Le Mans Porsche that was confiscated from some drug runners. The police officer said that they had a problem keeping the Christmas light bar in place, because it would get torn off at high speeds. In any other car I would have thought that he was BS'ing me.

yea this one was confiscated also, but they some how integrated the lights into the body so that they don't have that problem and also so it looks like a regular viper (unmarked)
