I have a 1996 Isuzu Rodeo (Automatic transmission). Sometimes when I start the vehicle, the dash indicator light showing I am in park will not come on. Then, when I shift to reverse, the dash light will show I'm in neutral (though I am in reverse). It will show properly that I'm in neutral when in neutral, however will show me as being in drive when I select 2nd or 3rd gear. Anything this is occuring, when driven the vehicle will shift very "hard," however sometimes the vehicle wont do this, seems like often if it's started when it's warm or has been turned off less than 10 minutes prior, will not have this issue. When the shift indicator is working properly, the vehicle also does not shift "hard." I've had the transmission fluid flushed very recently (this problem was occuring before the flush), any idea what the problem is? Also, is this something that is bad for the vehicle to be driving with?

Thanks,
Zammy

advice:

do a search for "hard shift" on the forum.

here's a thread I started on a kinda similar problem, but - grain of salt - I'm not an expert.

perhaps the others here with more knowledge can help further!

Zammy- you have a bad range/mode sensor on your 4L30E auto tranny. Very common problem. Search for "range sensor", "mode sensor", "4L30E" and you will find TONS of stuff.

I was told by the dealer this vehicle has a "saftey sensor" that will attempt to save the transmission by "hardening" the shift points/style on the vehicle if the transmission is low on fluid, and the sensor failing could cause this. Is this the sensor you are refering to?

Thanks
