I thought I heard somewhere that if you squeeze the upper radiator hose and when you release you should hear the coolant surge. If it doesnt the your waterpump is bad. Is this true?
And secondly is the waterpump located off the lower radiator hose, where the thermostat goes in?

When a water pump goes bad, usually you will hear the bearings going out or the seal will leak water. I've not heard of sqeezing the upper radiator hose to hear it surge to know if the water pump is bad, but one learns things every day. The thermostat is generally mounted on the engine where the upper radiator hose goes into the housing, but the lower hose is usually at the water pump. What kind of car is it?
