94 Cavalier 2.2 MPI wayward wire goes where? Blt327 02-07-2005, 08:10 PM
Hello to all. I have been given (saddled with?) this 94 Cav. Timing chain had broke. After replacing the chain, it wouldnt run, so pulled the head and found the bent exhaust valve, and put it back together, and now it runs pretty good...still have a couple issues, and hoping someone can shed a little light on my problem. There is a wiring connector, that I cannot for the life of me, figure where it goes....I bought a Haynes manual, and as usual, it tells us everything but what we REALLY need to know. The wiring comes out of the loom that feeds the alternator. It is a two lead connector, wires are green and black. There is about 18 inches of length to it....The rumor is that this is not the original engine, so maybe it just doesnt belong on this motor, but if anyone has one of these cars, and could tell me where that damn thing is supposed to plug in, I would surely be grateful. The car also lightly surges at an idle...could it be related?....thanks in advance to all!! noshun 02-07-2005, 09:06 PM Hello to all. I have been given (saddled with?) this 94 Cav. You didn't state which motor you have!!!The surge at idle is probably a vaccuum leak which can have many sources! Good luck Blt327 02-08-2005, 09:31 AM The motor is the 2.2 (stated in thread title) and hopefully I can find someone with the same setup in their 94 Cav. The motor does NOT appear to ever have been out of the car, so not sure if it is actually been swapped or not. I do know who ever has done the previous work on the car had their head up their butt! noshun 02-08-2005, 11:52 AM The motor is the 2.2 (stated in thread title) and hopefully I can find someone with the same setup in their 94 Cav. Sorry on oversight by me there! Have you tried putting a voltmeter across it when the motor is running to see if it is doing anything? Blt327 02-08-2005, 08:13 PM Well, I checked for voltage, and there is none. Course that doesnt really mean much. I did discover something today, though. This has to be a different engine, than what came in the car. I pulled off the leaking oil filter, and have discovered that this block is designed for an adapter between the block and the filter. When they changed out the motor, they removed the adapter, because it offsets the filter smack into the mount down there. <Corsica motor> They screwed the filter mount (hollow trhreaded 2 sided bolt) bak into the middle of the thing and put the filter on...It must have always leaked, although I cant really see a lot of oil down there...Very strange problem...It is a total bitch to get to!!!! So now I have to build my own adapter plate...I think I will pull the intake to facilitate access, and at the same time I'll go through throttle body and replace the gaskets, maybe that will solve the surging problem, as well....So.....That wire probably just doesnt go anywhere on this motor, but I would still like to know where it ORIGINALLY went!!! Oh, what have I gotten myself into this time??? Thanks for the reply Noshun... noshun 02-08-2005, 11:51 PM Well, I checked for voltage, and there is none. Course that doesnt really mean much. Oh, what have I gotten myself into this time??? Thanks for the reply Noshun... I think it may be Summit Racing that do an oil filter relocation kit that you can even have 2 filter on if you want. I'll see if I can get the part number I don't think it was THAT expensive! Blt327 02-09-2005, 02:28 PM Noshun, That was a g reat Idea!! Sadly, though, after checking out the web site and the kits, I can see that it does not come with the piece that bolts to the block. The adapter just screws onto where the old filter would go...This really sucks....I am going to have to build my own adapter plate....no fun at all....oh well, who said life was fair, anyway......thanks Blt327 02-09-2005, 07:16 PM OK. So I'm a dipstick!! Moved some stuff out of the way, so could get a good luck at this oil filter sitch. Yes, it was obviously an adapter on there before, because the paper gasket was still partially there, but actually all I had to do was get the surface cleaned off real well, and the oil filter DOES just screw on there...go figure...I guess looking at the thing with a mirror was screwing me up. So no more leaky filter, and guess what, while I was down there, discovered that the AC comp. clutch was not connected....Gee....could that be where my wayward wire goes......OF COURSE!!! Yay Now, if I could just get the thing to idle right... noshun 02-10-2005, 04:36 PM OK. So I'm a dipstick!! Moved some stuff out of the way, so could get a good luck at this oil filter sitch. Yay Now, if I could just get the thing to idle right... You may need to clean your IAC valve with some carb cleaner. There are about 15 posts about it. This allows air to bypass the throttle butterfly during cold cycle. Blt327 02-10-2005, 10:31 PM Yeah, I was lookin at the posts, and saw a few there about the idle air control valve, and frankly I was getting a little freaked about the horror stories I hear...Replacing all the sensors, CAT converters and different components. Luckily, I was able to track down my vacuum leak, using the acetylene torch. Opened up the tip enough to make a difference into the Throttle Body, and then starting hunting down the different vacuum leak possibilites. Only a few seconds at a time to make sure I didnt iginite, eventually tried the EGR area, and guess what?...Bingo! I had a good valve off a 2.8 V6, bolted it on....Beautiful....good to go....Smoooooooooooooooth idle........SWeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet, the EGR valve itself had gone bad. It rattled!!!!. noshun 02-11-2005, 04:51 PM Yeah, I was lookin at the posts, and saw a few there about the idle air control valve, and frankly I was getting a little freaked about the horror stories I hear...Replacing all the sensors, CAT converters and different components. Oh lumpy at idle and intermittent revving? Thought you meant that it was dying like a cold carb'd motor with wide open choke! I would have diagnosed a vac leak instantly. Oh well next time! Blt327 02-11-2005, 07:36 PM Noshun, Thanks for your help, and actually, you did diagnose the possible vacuum leak in your very first post. With all that electronic stuff on the motor, sometimes it is too easy to start thinking electrical...sensors and all that. Simple vacuum leak this time, though. Thanks again. Now I'm trying to figure out why speedometer doesnt work...in a different post. I think the telltale symptom there, is that the speedometer right now, is pegged at 100+ and it does not change when I disconnect the battery or the sensor...I think the 'inst. cluster may be bad. Found one on ebay, and I'll try that...the damn sensor is 70+ bucks...ouch! noshun 02-12-2005, 02:40 PM Noshun, Thanks for your help, and actually, you did diagnose the possible vacuum leak in your very first post.
