It could be any one of a million things. You need to get it hooked up to a scan tool or code reader. That will pull up the fault code that the computer has set. Then you have the direction to head. Any service place can pull the code(s) for you. Most will charge you something unless you have a history dealing with them and they like you. For awhile Autozone was offering free code reading but I don't know if they still are. I have a scan tool which I paid $1000 for so I pull codes for friends for $20.00. I think most service places charge more like $80.00. And their scan tools cost more than mine. You may also want to look into buying a scan tool. For about $200 on up you can get one. The more you spend the more it will do. All cars/trucks from '96 on are OBD II which means the scan tool will work on anything from '96 up. Mine also has OBD (on-board diagnostics) I for Ford/GM/Chrysler/Jeep going back to about '82 when computer controls first started showing up that's why it cost a bit more. Good luck. If you find the code maybe post it here and then you will get advice on where to go to resolve it. Another note, if you have emission testing in your state most stations will immediatly fail you if the check/service engine light is lit. And they check to make sure you didn't just pull the bulb out before testing. Smart testers are even checking to make sure you didn't wire the bulb up to another bulb, like say the brake or seat belt bulb, to fool them. The check engine light will go off on it's own after starting. If it goes off at the same time as some other bulb they got ya.

Did you recently get gas? If you left the gas cap even a little loose it'll set a code. Tighten the cap then drive, within a few days the code will reset if that's the problem. The local snots in our area have been having fun by loosening gas caps and driving people crazy.
Take a look at http://www.scantool.net/ they have a scan tool that hooks up to a laptop or even a Palm, it reads and clears codes and displays engine data realtime, for under $100. It saved my butt when my oxygen sensor decided to shift its operating point so that I didn't get enough rich/lean transistions.
What could have been a very expensive job at the mechanic, became a $50 job I did myself.
Let us know what happens.

Those aren't valid code numbers for a '99 Chev van. All OBD II codes begin with a letter and I believe they all have 4 numbers. You need to find out the correct codes and I can look up their meaning for you.

I took to the shop again the problem wasn't fixed at all, although it works fine its start to slipping after a short trip in the highway, with speed over 50mph, when arrive to a reduce speed area like stop sign its start again shifting abruptly from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd and when i speed up faster (i usually speed up very slowly trying to protect te gearbox) but when i speed up faster the abrupt shift seems to be softer and i think the computer show the same codes again, any help so far? thanks
