I just purchased a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer with 51,000 miles.
I noticed the Automatic Transmission fluid smells not quite clean. The transmission is functioning perfect though.

What is the best way to flush the Transmission and replace all (or most of the fluid. What would be the best fluid to replace the OEM fluid with to ensure longer transmission life.

You could do this yourself if your just wanting to replace the fkuid, but if you are wanting to replace the filter you might conseider taking to have it done.... the tube that is connected to the pan is almost impossible to remove, pay the $130 and take it to the dealership

I would suggest doing it ALL your self. The AW4 tranny has the added feature of the drain plug. This eliminates allot of the mess. Thinmints is right though, that dipstick tube can be a bear to get free, but once you do, just lightly coat it with grease, so the next time its not so bad. The filter is held on by 3 10mm bolts, once it is removed you'll get about 2 more quarts than just draining the pan. You will need 4 quarts of your favorite brand of Dextro/Mercron III. I have run the Valvoline H/Milage fluid in mine, at 99K+ still running great. Also while your under there. drain the T-case and fill it with Mobile 1 Synthetic Dextron/Mercron III type fluid. Hope this helps.
