i'm toying with the idea of a porsche motor in a bug..can they truly drop in and go or are there other things to consider such as axle and transmission upgrades? the motor is from a 74, and i think in could get the trans with it fior a reasonable price..i'd have to talk to the guy. he said i could have first option, but he has at least two other guys looking..one just freakin happens to be rebuilding a 74 porsche..what a coincidence..

The motor is larger & requires fairly extensive modification to bodywork in order to fit. It will bolt to your transaxle, but requires flywheel modifications.

porsche engines are nice to say that you have a porsche engine in your beetle but they are not very cost effective. The performance parts are way more expensive and harder to find than the beetle engine, you wont make as much hp with as much money in a porsche engine than you would in a vw engine. If you want power go with a type 4 conversion. Check out the "Bug Me" videos and they sell a type 4 conversion how to video.

ok..great advice. thanks for the help. i'm glad i got help before i put down the money. so i can get a powerful motor from the bug huh? i kind of want a sleeper, but not to go out and pick fights. i want to be able to handle the interstate and highways..i'm in the flat lands. i'd been hearing that a bug nmotor can be bored out and get pretty good power. at what point should i call it enough? it's all stock now..not sure on the deminsions..but it has been recommended boring to 90mm?? any suggestions..i think it's 84 now? sound right? :banghead:

Well the type 4 motor is from a Bus and I think the cases have more clearance because they are 2000cc's or more. About boring it out, well you dont bore out vw cylinder, you just buy a whole new set of pistons and cylinders. 90mm is a really good size, its not too big but still gives you plenty of power. If you have a 69mm crank then the size of engine with the 90mm p&c's would come out to be 1756cc. If you want you could go all the way up to 1915cc's with 94mm pistons but those can cause some problems like not cooling effieciently and what happends alot with stock cases is that a crack sometimes develops behind the #3 cylinder on the case. I would go with a longer stroke crank and stay around the 90-90.5mm pistons and cylinders. You could go with a 78mm stroke and 90.5mm p&c's and would come out to 2007cc's which is pretty damn big in a beetle.
