I have a 91 ford probe lx. I have this problem right now that chaps my hide. after driving my car for about 30 minutes. I shut the engine off to take care of some errands approx: 1hour. When i go to crank the engine I get this grinding sound and my rpm drop & the engine dies. I crank it again & I get the same thing but I give it gas to prevent it from dying. After a while the grinding sound stops and I could drive off without fear of the engine dying. Does some know what this problem is?

i had the same problem, it would happen randomely. I replaced the fuel pump, and it fixed it.

Yes I did all that new plugs, wires, cap & rotor. I even spent $1000.00 to replace my cooling system, new pump, heater core, hoses, thermostat, radiator, etc. I still have this problem.

Seriously I'd try new plugs again...seriously...u prolly have something fouling them out...Got an exhaust leak? Your cooling system wouldn't have anything to do with it. The guy who worked on my car gave me a major tune up and said if that didn't work to replace the fuel pump. Just a guess

For your problem, sounds like you are in need of rechecking your fuel pump. On my 86 Ranger, I had same type of problem and it was the low pressure pump in the tank. It also has a high pressure fuel pump in the frame rail. Trace all your fuel lines and make sure you only have the one pump, and check all lines for any kinks. May also want to check the strainer, sender, and connecting hose on the in-tank pump. Good luck.

As for the main problem(s) here, it sounds alot like either your starter(s) or solenoid(s) aren't disengaging after you start. (The reason for the (s)'s is because more than one of you are having the same trouble, not because I think your car has more than one.) Get your starter tested, and change your solenoid, and the grinding should go away.

i also was going to say your starter.. when it is disengaging it is getting stuck on the gear and grinding cause engine to torque out and die.. and when you give it gas it over powers the starter... ?
