XJ6 starts and Cuts off when in gear

yes we have an 86 XJ6, and it cuts on and idles, but time it is put in any gear besides park or nuetral the engine cuts off, sometimes we can keep it going by keeping the RPM's up between shifts but what is the problem if any of you know.
