painting fiberglass (1st paint job)bsal007 02-02-2005, 06:28 PM Hello everyone. I am getting ready to paint a fiberglass race car body and need some help. I have never painted using a gun before, but I have painted using the trusty old spray can, and even made it come out decent. I know preperation is the key to a good paint job and I have put in a lot of time sanding the body getting it ready. The paint I am using is base only, no clear Acrylic. I have been told I don't need to prime it first being fiberglass, as long as I get all of the shiny coating off of the body. (gelcoat?) Does this sound right? Also, the paint I am using is a metallic color. is there anything special I need to know to make it look good? I saw somewhere that the first coat I should go the length of the car and the second coat I should go at a 45 degree angle to the car. Will this look ok with the metallic? Also, any advice you can give a newbiw like me would be appreciated. Thanks maddermaxx 05-08-2005, 08:55 PM Ok.. Whoever said sand off ALL of the shiney stuff (gelcoat) = no just ruff it up.. and when you say Acrylic. .do you mean Auto Air? if so then YES YOU HAVTO CLEAR if u spill gas or even water on any acrylic it will simply run off.. clear it with something like House Of Kolor Kosmik Clear. and use a Base sealer for it.. if it's a dark color use black. .a bright color use white .. hope this helps.. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
