It is locacted behind the harmonic balancer.

I just had to replace the crank position sensor in my 89 Regal Limited 2.8 and it was located in the back of the block, toward the passenger side, just above the oil pan and is held in place with a 8mm bolt. This sensor seems to be a common problem. It is very difficult to get out so make sure you have tested it with a multimeter before you waste time and energy here. Also if you have real trouble getting it out then you may need to access it thru the oil pan!
