yes i think you can i just replace mine last week on a 2000 and i had never done on before.get the haynes book on your venture then follow it step by stepit will tell you if you would have to remove the engine.you have to flip between sections to do this but it can be done. i didn't have to remove the engine it just took a little while and i took my time. .good luck!!!
p.s. replaces the head bolts when you do this.

Cartracker.com has a class action law suit petition circulating about the very same problem. It seems GM knew there was a problem but won't cover it as a recall. I called Chevrolet myself on their Customer Satisfaction number but they won't cover my $825.00 replacement because my vehicle has 128,000 miles on it. They say if I get the repair done at a dealership and submit it to them in writing, that they will CONSIDER a reimbursement. I'm going to do it just to see if they will reimburse me and if they don't, I'm going to hand it off to a lawyer.

Chevrolet Submission Guidelines:

1. Submit the repair bill
2. Submit proof of payment
3. Submit copy of vehicle registration (proof of ownership)
4. Send to:
CHEVROLET
P.O. Box 33170
Detroit, MI 48232-5170

You must have a service request number, meaning you have to call Chevrolet to get a "tracking" number first. Anyone else who has had this problem I urge you to call Chevrolet and give them all the details. If not, their defect might keep costing us, the consumer more and more money!

Did you changed oil and filter?
I changed oil and filter 3 times within 1 week.
My guess is you may have plugged oil pick up from the crap that results from coolant/oil mixture. It sorta looks like peanut butter/mud.
