other speaker sizes for 1991 corolla rear speakers?

can anyone confirm that you can put in 6 1/2" speakers for the rear deck of a 1991 corolla?? Crutchfield states that 5 1/4" are supposed to be installed, but I read somewhere that you could possible put 6 1/2" speakers instead. I know that the 96 Corollas have 6 1/2" speakers in the rear. Would I have to make the opening a little bigger for 6 1/2" speakers?? I think I might just hook up the speaker wire to 6x9 and get 6x9 boxes and mount them in the trunk.
