Windows work when they want, why?

My power windows on my 98 Lesabre work when they want. I can start the car and they will work. Go to the store, turn off the car, come out and restart the car and they won't. One won't work for weeks and then start working again. When I press the power window switch to lower the window I can hear and feel the car engine lower a little like it is trying to lower the window. Anyone know why my windows do this? The drivers window has always worked correctly.

Thanks

BTW, when you try to lower the windows that are not working you can here a click inside the door of the effected window like the relay is engaging.

Just a suggestion......did something get spilled on the switch panel? If sugary liquid like a Coke is in there, it might be shorting out the electrical contacts as the temperature warms up after running for awhile. Maybe pop off the bezel cover, unhook the switch box and give it a good cleaning?

What can I spray in there to clean them? Will WD-40 work?

WD-40 is great stuff, but for cleaning electrical components like switches try some isopropal alcohol and a lint free cloth. Something that will leave it apparent that its clean.
I use WD on external parts all the time - with enough overspray to double as aftershave!

Fixing electrical problems requires finding what has power and what doesn't have power. If Power is getting to the window motor (when the switch is turned on) then the motor is at fault for some reason. If power isn't getting to the motor then either the wiring to the motor is broken at some place (usally where it flexes when the door opens) or the relay is bad. Relays are mechanical items and the points do get pitted and power can some times get through.

Get a volt ohm meter and start hunting. Check out a book from the Library follow the circuits.

I had the same problem on my '97 Venture. I have a bad habit of leaving my windows open at night, and sometimes it rains... and you get the picture of what happens next. I took the panel off the top and disconnected the switch and used a spray electrical cleaner I bought at Autozone. I also cleaned the contacts ( blades from the rocker switch.) I then reassembled everything and sprayed WD-40 on the whole assembly that goes back into the door panel, especially where the connections for the switch are. I have since had no problems with an intermittent power window switch. You could try this first, and if this does not solve your problem, then the next step would be what LeSabre97mint reccomends in the post above.
