Alright here again up for discussion the 96 Z 34, 119k miles. My mechanic told me not to change the transmission fluid after all these miles, because he thinks it might cause problems. The car is shifting smoothly. I just thought of giving the car a preventing treatment. What do you think?

Thanks,

Jürgen

i have a 96 z34 also and my tranny is knocking into gear but only for 1st and 2nd gear. i think changing the fluid will help if not solve the problem because its never been changed and it has 140,000 miles. im just about to change my fluid but ive never heard of it causing problems. the only porlbem i can think of would be the gasket but u should replace it anyway.

The transmission pan gasket is reusable.I have used them over and over again with no leaks.Someone at GM probally thought of that and that was a very good Idea.

In this day and age I find that quote somewhat funny and out of the ordinary.

Having worked in a garage many years ago, I can tell you there are 2 types of opinion on this question. One side says that if you haven't changed the fluid by 75,000 miles, don't. The main reasoning is that the tranny "wears" in certain ares and sediment builds up in certain areas and it (the tranny) gets set in it's ways. Replacing the fluid throws it out of whack by removing those sediments, and the viscosity of the fluid is different so it will act differently with the new fluid. The other side advocates regular fluid and filter changes, no matter how many miles are on the vehicle.Because scheduled changes remove deposits and add new lubricating qualities from the new fluid. I've worked besides mechanics with both opinions and I guess it's up to your own preference, once you know both arguments you can use that info to guide you in making your own decision.

Well i have had a little experience and i have talked a fair amount with my local transmission shop.(he's done 3 trannys for me) He said that is it follows what Venture owner said but one thing he warned against is have a tranny flush done because sometimes there are screens that hold sediment away from and at certain places in quite a few transmissions and when a flush is done the screens get blown out of place and he has said that he has had several such cases come in anywhere from 24hours to a week after a flush and he gets to rebuild the tranny because it grenades it self.
