I just bought a '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Limited) 5.2l engine (126k). I bought it with a bad transmission (car could only be moved switching into 4 wheel Low). I had a friend of mine in WV install a transmission with 96k on it - said it was a real good looking unit. I drove back last night without incident (DC (270miles)) - until I came to the first red light of the journey - the replacement transmission has gone the same route. Symptoms: Won't move off of the line from parked (appears to be in neutral). Putting Jeep in 4 Wheel Low will get it to move, though very slowly and underpowered for the RPM - this lasts for about 30 seconds and then it will kick up a gear and will move OK. Reverse is not a problem.

I tried disconnecting the battery in case the computer/sensors threw it into some kind of limp mode - no joy.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

well the LO range you are describing with the RPM's going way up but moving very slowly - this is normal for 4WD LO.

it actually didn't apear to be a Trans problem, I was looking more toward the Transfer Case - sounds like the TC is slipping into Nuetral.

"just to clear something up': it works fine in reverse while in 4WD HI?

Yeah, It works well in 4 WD Hi.

What fluid goes in these (Mopar?). I just checked the transfer case fluid and it is low.

it's actually just plain jane DexronIII/Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid. Nothing special, If you plan on changing the fluid then I would switch to a synthetic equivilant to DexronIII/Mercon - this will keep the VC from going bad.

For the transfer case?

Yup... Use the Dextron/Mercron ATF for the transfer case. You should get that in a synthetic ATF.. Mobil 1 or Amsoil ATF is the most common synthetic for the transfer case.

If the transfer case oil is really bad, I would use a regular oil in it and change it out with each of the next two oil changes before putting in the synthetic.

The transmission needs "ATF +3" made for chrysler products only. You can use the newer "ATF +4" in your transmission but if you do, it is recommended that you don't go back to the ATF +3 in it.

Low oil in the transfer case could cause some shifting problems.

LATEST: The fluid was low in the transfer case and high in the Transmission. I adjusted them accordingly. Although i couldn't pull away in D, I could put it in 1 - then 2 - then D and I can get around. I took it to a trans place and they said the trans is bad (want 2k to rebuild). Can I just drive it like it is for a while, or am I gonna get left stranded?

hi...

i'm also having problem with the transmission of my 94 GC Ltd. It seems that it only goes up to 3rd gear so i hear the engine revving at 70 mph. i haven't checked the oil condition yet. my mechanic is telling me that i have to replace or have the transmission rebuilt. however i don't have the funds right now so i would like to hear from you guys before i make any decision.

thanks in advance
