i want to make my jeep have a smooth low-noise sound/kinda loud but not too loud,,, im guessing this is done with cat backs and stuff,,, whats the best way to do this to with the least money with a good outcome? cheaper the better

but i don't want to just take off my muffler so it sounds horrible and unbearably loud

the best perforamce wise woul dbe the Flowmaster American Thunder Cat-Back exhaust system - it's a louder exhaust tho.

a low tone with good performance the best would prolly be Gibson exhaust systems.

I dunno how much the Gibson exhaust system is I know they are very cheap, The FlowMaster AmericanThunder system for a 94 5.2L is around $315. so the gibson should be considerably cheaper.

I had the Flowmaster 40 Series installed on my 4.0 & it gave me the sound I was looking for! I bought a new cat at the same time (nothing fancy) & kept the original pipes! I paid $225.

The sound is more aggressive when accelerating at lower RPM's. I'm happy with the sound & I too was on a tight budget!

go here you can hear what it sounds like.

and also I know it's some where on this site, the American Thunder system added 26HP to a 98 ZJ w/ 5.9L

I haven't heard one in person, but i do plan on getting this system this weekend. but you can goto that website above and listen to some vehicle with that system - it doesn't seem that loud.

I too thought that the 40 Series was going to be too loud! Once I started my Jeep after the installation, I was completely satisfied with the sound of the 40! It sounds nice when you start the Jeep, & it's not loud enough to wake the neighbors, atleast in my opinion, but I live in the Bronx!

I had a hard time choosing between the 40 & 50 Series (40 Series being the louder of the 2) since I don't know anyone with a Jeep with a Flowmaster. I did check out the website that dskob81 mentioned before buying, but I wanted to hear it on a Jeep in front of me!

I thought the 40 Series would be Harley Davidson loud (or close to it) but it's not. The sound grows on you & listening to the factory stereo is just the same as with the stock muffler on.

I've had no problems with the Flowmaster on my 4.0 & I actually feel a difference!

I bought my Flowmaster at a local muffler shop here in the Bronx. I was going to buy it on-line but there was no real difference in price, plus I couldn't wait for the upgrade!

I paid a total of $225 for the Flowmaster & a generic cat!

Check out some of the muffler shops in your area if you havn't done so already, one of them should have it in stock! You could also search on-line for it, most sellers offer it with free shipping!

Did you install yours yourself? if you did,.,, did u weld it?,, will the catalytic(i duno how to spell it) converter still be there? or does it have to come off to install it?

i have this on my 96 5.2.It sounds perfect.http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=partdetail.asp&part=FLO%2D17142&N=120+400238+303433&Ntk=P%5FManufacturerPartNumber

The shop installed it for me, took about 10 min. They simply cut around the 02 Sensor (the one on the cat converter) then they made cuts so the cat & muffler fell off!

They welded on the new muffler & cat, then they welded the original 02 Sensor back on.

If your only installing a new muffler, the Cat Converter does not need to come off!

DK,glad to here you didn't buy it from Flowmaster.I almost made the same mistake, but I found it from Summit. Its really a nice system, not too loud but it still has a healthy sound.I put a K&N cold air kit on at the same time and my mileage went up by like 2 mpg.well worth it.

darn, the one at summit only fits the 5.2, i have the 4.0

after installing like what xj and dk have will the cat. conveter come off? if you say the cat. converter comes off,,, then i won't pass emissions will i?

No the Cat, will not come off! I actually bought a new cat at the same time, i just finished installing it about an hour ago. GNR try to find this system for yours, I am sure it is exactly what your looking for. It isn't louder then the old system (OEM) - well maybe by a decibal. But it has a deeper tone. - It sounds great. I cannot express how happy I am of this sound of this system........

My Thanx to XJ - way cheaper then from the Flowmaster site. I didn't even spend that much in the use of gas for the "less then hour" drive to summit.... WELL WORTH IT.

GNR - i am sure if you find this sytem for the 4.0L and you get it you will like it.

I have a 93 Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0. What I did on my jeep was put a brand new Exhaust system. Brand New Manifold was about $200.00. Dual Exhaust Flowmaster 40 series that was about $275.00. All new pipes Two, 18 in. Chrome tips those run about $45.00 each. Now the trick to hear your Jeep roaring blocks away is to put bigger pipes for the exhaust. The stock jeeps come with a 2 1/4 change it to a 3 1/4 in. . Oh and another thing change your catalytic converter to a smaller one. Those run about $120.00. I know its not cheap but you wont be dissapointed. Remember Flowmaster is the best around for the quality and performance.

GNR,I'm pretty sure you can get this to fit a 4.0.The only difference I can think of is the size of the outlet on the cat might be different, but I'm sure if it is different, you can get an adapter or reducer or something to make it fit.It actually comes with a reducer because the inlet on the muffler is bigger than the cat.It probably won't sound the same as a 5.2 but I'm sure it can be made to work

UPDATE: I just put the K&N FIPK (Fuel Injected Performance Kit) on my 94 ZJ (5.2L) and damn what a sweet sound, the sound of that suction of the intake is SWEET! I don't know which is better the sound the of Air coming IN or going OUT.

alright i have found a flowmaster exhaust system online that is for a 4.0 and its off some site called rustys http://rustysoffroad.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=rustys&Product_Code=ZJFM-50&Category_Code=PER_EXH
but it says it comes with delta 50 series and it said other mufflers available... thats the only place i could find that had the whole system for a 4L

Do yourself a favor and head over to Rustys
https://rustysoffroad.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=rustys&Category_Code=PER_EXH
and check out their cat-back systems...You really don't need to replace the catalytic converter...just what comes after...At rusty you can get either the flowmaster 40 or 50. I have both on two seperate jeeps. the 50 has a serious sound to it...the safety inspector thought I had a bad exhaust until he looked under the jeep and saw the flowmaster...he let out a whistle of appreciation and passed the Jeep!
